Questions about the campus and facilities?

Hey, I'm a rising senior and have been really interested in UChicago. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, I'm not going to be able to visit the college before I apply or even if I'm actually accepted. So to current students or parents of current students, I would like to ask the following questions to get a better feel of the campus and what it offers.

1.) Is there a gym on campus? (I assume all universities have one but is it free? or is there a fee?) Also, for those who use the gym, is there a good deal of weight lifting equipment (i.e dumbbells, bench presses, Olympic bars, cable machines...) How would you rate the gym? (Yes, sadly this is kinda important to me lol)

2.) How big would you say the campus is? Is there room to skateboard or bike around or is it pretty restrictive for those kind of activities?

3.) Are there basketball hoops on campus? And if so, is there a good deal of students who play or is it a typical Ultimate Frisbee college?

4.) Are there volunteer opportunities in Chicago for UChic students? Like right now I volunteer at a soup kitchen in NYC and I would like to continue to do so in Chicago.

5.) Are you allowed to use Limewire? (A friend of mine from RPI told me that he would get kicked out for using it so I'm wondering if this is a rule in UC as well.)

6.) How is the weather in Chicago? I plan on taking my acoustic guitars with me to college so I don't want the temp changing so much so often that I would have to keep tuning them.

7.) And for those who bring expensive things to the school, is it safe to keep a $2000 Gibson guitar in my dorm room or should I get an cheaper alternative? Also, is there a lot of stealing? (This may be typical of college life but I want to get a students perspective)

Thanks for helping me out!

Two free gyms: one new (Ratner) one older (Henry Crown).

Check out the campus on Google maps. It’s very unusual-- you have four square blocks of green and Hogwarts-ness, surrounded by a real neighborhood. It’s very different to most campuses I’ve been on, and most similar to the University of Pennsylvania of the ones I know. I haven’t seen anybody skateboarding around, but lots and lots of bikes. Plus a beautiful lakeshore path. I see you’re a New York City kid-- Chicago is more of a campus than NYU and in some ways comparable to Columbia.

There are indoor basketball courts. Every time I’m at the gym I see people playing pickup games. Obama played hoops a lot in Henry Crown  Ultimate Frisbee “typical?” I’ll leave it to another poster to weigh in on that one. It sounds like you’re interested in casual athletics, which is great-- Chicago does not have a big varsity scene but it does have an impressive club, intramural, and pickup circuit.

Yes! ucsc.uchicago.edu

Filesharing= bad

Oy. Chicago weather varies a lot throughout the year and during the day. Maybe global warming will help even that out.

I would leave it at home if you’d die parting with it, just for your own sake. When I was in the dorms, people left expensive stuff in open areas all the time, which I wouldn’t do just from a common sense perspective. Student theft can happen here, as it can (and does) happen anywhere, and if your roommate isn’t fastidious about keeping the door locked when he or she is out, your candy might be up for grabs for somebody on the lookout for resellable items.

Thanks for the info!

also is it within walking distance of northwestern? I have some friends over there and it’d be cool to be able to hang out often

I think it’s about twenty miles from Hyde Park to Evanston, so no. It’s probably not too difficult to get there, but it will take some time.

Evanston is like 40 minutes away.

I believe you can take a train to the end and you will be there (that’s what I heard)?

It’s bad to Limewire anywhere (awkward sentence). Shouldn’t be file sharing. :D
