Hello everyone,

I don't know much things about the common app so i have few questions.

I am going to apply ED to an university but i will also apply RD to a lot more, but i will have a certificate (hopefully) in December, will i have the time to add it to my January applications or i have to submit the same to all my schools ?

Also, i run et read a lot but it stays really personal, no competions or any stuff like this, should i mention this in my activities or it does not make any sense ?

Thank you a lot, & excuse me if my questions are silly, it's mainly because am an international student!

You can submit different versions of your applications to different colleges (I don’t think there’s a limit on how many different versions you send). Keep in mind that you’re only allowed to edit your main Common App essay twice after you submit your first version (i.e. you can only have three different version of your Common App essay).

You are welcome to put hobbies in the activities section, but I would only list them if you spend a significant amount of time doing them, they’re very important to you, and ideally, you are trying to complete a project - so, for running, this might be preparation for a half-marathon or something like that. I personally wouldn’t really put reading down since colleges kind of assume that anyone would be doing this anyway.

I hope this helps; good luck!

Be sure your applications get in on time (and don’t wait until the last day to submit, sometimes the Common App has technical issues). You can always send an email to admissions after your apply if you have a significant new accomplishment to report that you would like them to consider as part of your application.

@LAMuniv So i won’t put reading, but for running, can i mention marathons even if i didn’t win ?

@intparent I’ll try to submit my applications a week before the deadlines, is that fine ? And thank you!

I would list marathons even if you didn’t win - it’s a pretty big and time-consuming activity regardless of how you placed. Reading is your call, but unless you’re doing it for a specific project, I wouldn’t list it.

Agree that the marathons can and should go in. I can’t think of a way to put reading into the ECs very easily. I guess it could be mentioned in your essays IF it fits the story you are telling, or maybe one of your recommenders could mention it. Yes, a week before is fine. Be sure you print and proofread the application on paper before submitting. The print format can have issues, and it is also a good way to catch and correct typos. You can’t submit a corrected version, so try to submit your cleanest possible copy to start with.

@LAMuniv I will mainly apply to engineering schools, maybe mentioning reading will be useless to my application. Thank you for your help!

@intparent Maybe one of my teachers will mention it, but i don’t think it’s important anymore. I’ll make sure to print and pay close attention to everything i write, and thank you!
