Recently got into Columbia as a transfer and was just wondering how the Core works for transfers. From what I understand a typical student takes 2-3 Core classes a semester. Not sure what it is for a transfer since I in essence missed the first year? Just looking for opinions on whether it is difficult to catch up. Will it restrict me from fully pursuing my interests in business?

Thanks

1) what school did you transfer into, cc, seas or gs.
2) it is usually 2-3 classes per semester in the first two years, and then maybe 1 or 0 classes in your upperclass years. in your case, some classes may transfer so it will not be as if all your courses would have to be core, it might mean that in your senior year when many columbia students aren’t taking core courses, you might have 1 you take a semester.
3) columbia doesn’t have a business major, if this is truly your interest, please know that columbia’s options are limited to academic economics courses and a few set of courses in the b-school open to ugrads. though i will say that you come across as having a poor understanding of columbia by mentioning this on a columbia forum, it would behoove you to get to know the school first before posting.

4) the key for formulating a career in business is learning to talk the talk, go to networking sessions, make sure you have a solid math and to an extent econ background, but at a certain point it is as much about your internships experience as it is about what courses you take. and to answer your question more pointedly: transfers are able to intern and seek outside experience just the same as students who go all four years.

the only ‘restriction’ that may be placed on you is perhaps adding multiple concentrations that are in fields that do not have to do with your current major choice. you might not be able to explore philosophy or art in the same way.

Thanks for the response.
I got accepted into CC and am probably going to major in Econ.

I’m an Econ transfer.
Basically, there are these exceptions for transfers.
You can get exempted from the Global Core and science core for history classes. According to the rules, only one math class can be used to fulfill a science core, but you can use two if you’re a transfer. If your previous school had a writing seminar, you can usually get out of University Writing. You don’t have to take Frontiers of Science, but if you don’t take it you have to take another science core (3 total instead of tow). You generally take lit hum as a sophomore and CC as a junior. In addition to that, you have to take your PE credit (unless you got exempted for that) and your music/lit hum, which you can split up however you like
