questions about the ssat

hi my name is tom and i live in seoul, south korea.
this is the first time actually making a thread although i have been looking through the forums for about 5 months
I have a few questions about the ssat and I would be glad if you guys could answer them. The schools that I will be appyling for are SPS, Hotchkiss, Exeter, and groton. (just in case it helps);)
1.How many times can you take the ssat? (i'm thinking about seeing it al least two times if ican)
2.if i take the ssat and i dont enter a school to send the grades to, then will I be able to ask them to send it later?? like when i send my applications??
3.what are the average ssat scores for the above schools?
4.is the first test's score erased if you take the test 2 times??

Being an international Asian you probably want to be in the upper range of 95-99%. I think you can arrange it online (when you register for the test) which schools to send your score to, and you shouldn't need take the SSAT more than twice.

Good luck and welcome to CC!

thanx a lot but can u take the ssat more than once?? how many times??

Technically you can take it as many times as there are test dates but you don't want to take it more than twice.

Will the schools see the first test's score even if you want to take it again?

The schools will see every score you submit.

Tom,

I believe that the SSAT “year” is from August 1 to July 31 of the next year. When you elect to send your SSAT results to a school, all of the results of any SSAT tests that you have taken in that year will be forwarded to the school.

For example, if you take the SSAT in April of your seventh grade year (and do not request that these results be sent to any schools), and then you take the test a second time in November of your eighth grade year, and this time request your results be sent to the schools you are applying, the schools will only see your November results.

If you did not send your November results to any schools, and decided to take the test again in January and send those results to the schools, the schools will get both your November and January results, because both tests were taken in the same SSAT year.

I do not know if you can request scores from a prior SSAT year be sent to a school.

This is how I understand the SSAT score reporting to work and is consistent with how it worked for my daughter.

like what if I dont enter a scchool to send the results to? can i ask ssat to send a report later?? like when i want them too

Yes, you can ask them to send reports later if you do not enter a school. However, as explained above, they will send the results of the tests you have taken -- not just the most recent.

Last year my son took the test in Oct. We purchased a package that allowed him to send his scores to up to 10 schools. When he took the test, he did not include any schools for score reporting. When he had his scores and his list of schools was set, we were able to input the school codes from the SSAT website. After that, the schools received the scores.

You can still send the scores later if you do not purchase the package. It will probably be more expensive. Look at the add/cancel scores section of the SSAT website http://ssat.org/

hey tom, i'm a korean-american going to exeter this fall
umm actually, i was 93%, and was accepted to most my schools, but i hear that at exeter, koreans are usually in the 96-100%, while whites are 90-97, minorities 80-90s

as long as you have some other attributes to help you, such as excellence in sports, music, etc. etc., your ssat scores will not be that important

one more question (sorry folks)
do you send the scores first or the application forms first

because when i saw hotchkiss' prospectus it said you had to submit a form before giving the ssat scores how about all the other schools??

In order for Admissions to establish a file with your name, you have to fill out an inquiry form. For most schools these can be filled out online. Usually you have to fill out one of these forms in order to receive the viewbook and application or schedule an interview. I believe this is what Hotchkiss needs before the SSAT scores.
