I've narrowed my choice of film schools down to these three: UCLA, SB, and SD.

UCLA is my dream school mainly because I identify with their philosophy to movies, and it is arguably the "Harvard" of all film schools (2-3% acceptance rate); in the very high chance that I don't get accepted, how are the film production/theory courses at Santa Barbara and San Diego? I've only heard "oodles" about these schools, but very good ones.

I am transferring from a CC in LA; here is my situation:

GPA = 4.0
IGETC - Complete by Spring 2010
Major: Film Production
EC: Volunteering at local Park and Rec Center

I have a decent personal statement, critical analysis (I am currently working on), and I have an abundance of scripts and stories I wrote which is arguably the most important focus of the UCLA Film Program.

I have also had a good amount of experience(even I heard it is meaningless in the application process) in making films.

Any of you guys hear anything about the above schools and whether they are that competitive or not (besides LA)?

ALSO:

I am thinking about DROPPING a course (Nutrition) because I am taking FIVE classes and I didn't realize that I don't need it since I already fulfilled the AREA E in the CSU application. I really need some time to work on applications!

This is my FIRST "W," will this affect my chances at transferring at a UC?

i just got back from a UC Berkeley transfer lecture from a UCB Admissions officer. In regards to W’s, they simply cross it off and for the most part ignore it, BUT you must put it on the application as it’s part of your academic record. I’m sure it’s the same for the rest of the UC’s.

There is a 500 word additional comment box where you can explain any low grades or in your case, a W. It’s nothing to loose sleep over.

Now as far as film, I don’t think it’s necessarily competitive at UCSB or UCSD. I think that UCSB’s program has been said to be more of a “film study” and there are resources to take a few production classes. UCSD might be more production based, but even if it is it really can’t compare to UCLA.

“I think that UCSB’s program has been said to be more of a “film study” and there are resources to take a few production classes.”

Yeah…that’s what I’ve been hearing, but I also hear they built a huge building for the film department recently and was wondering if that was going to change things in terms of their overall curriculum - could they be trying to branch out to a more production-oriented school?

“UCSD might be more production based, but even if it is it really can’t compare to UCLA.”

= ( Don’t make me more sad than I already am…lol…I keep hearing UCLA FILM is ridiculously hard to transfer into; their transfer rate(3-4%) is lower than Harvard’s!

“i think film would fall under “Visual Arts” at UCSD - UCSD - Department of Visual Arts”

Thanks though. I like UCSD, but I am a bit if-fy on their “oxford” curriculum.

i know it’s not UCLA or even a UC, but you can always check out CSULB. i’ve heard they have a decent film program, i mean it cant be that bad if Spielberg went there! haha
