Questions about transferring to UMICH

Has anybody here transferred to Umich? Im an incoming freshman and planning to transfer to Umich for mechanical engineering. I just have a few questions:

  1. When did you apply for transfer? The course requirements for engineering transfer is (4 math courses, 4 sciences, 1 engineering, and 1 writing) That sounds highly unreasonable and would take at least 2 years to complete the requirements, given I take 1 math and science per semester. I initially wanted to apply so that I would be able to attend Umich in my sophomore year but now it just seems impossible.
  2. What other requirements are there to be able to transfer besides course requirements? I know we use our commonapp again, same supplements, and a new essay about why you want to transfer to Umich. Is there anything else besides these?
    Thanks

University of Michigan is not very transfer-friendly and/or in-state Michigan community colleges are doing a poor job of preparing transfer students to transfer to University of Michigan. Take a look at transfer credit equivalencies at https://www.ugadmiss.umich.edu/TCE/Public/CT_TCESearch.aspx and http://apps.engin.umich.edu/equivalencies/ . Many other colleges, including in-state Michigan community colleges, do not have courses that are accepted for transfer credit for specific subjects (e.g. calculus 1, 2, 3) at University of Michigan, so transfer students often have to retake courses that they already completed elsewhere.

I wanted to try and transfer into Michigan as well because I heard it was good in accounting. However, I was talked out of it because I would have to retake a bunch of courses and basically start over and end up paying even more than I should for college. If you mind possibly graduating college late, then it wouldn’t be good to transfer.

For engineering all you need is this : https://www.engin.umich.edu/admissions/undergrad/transfer-students/admissions/
Don’t get this confused with cross campus transfer.
Usually you need to “apply” before February 1…That doesn’t mean you will have everything finished by then. Think the applications come out in August since you need to write an essay also.
So many do come in as Sophomores. But many also take like Chem/lab , physics/lab, Calc and English or the computer course for one semester. It’s about 18 credits. Evidently if you have any AP credits it would be helpful even for electives. Take 2 classes in the summer and go from there. The person on the bottom page of what I sent is really helpful. Also talk now with the department about transferring so your not wasting classes. As stated Michigan is especially picky especially on Calc and physics outside class’s. You “don’t” want to hear it is OK from your current school only from Michigan. Things change and your school wouldn’t have the information. Also there is something called Transfer Tuesdays at Michigan. They will walk you through the process

It doesnt seem possible to take all the required courses in one school year as there are 4 math courses, 2 sciences, 1 engr, 1 writing. However, you said “So many do come in as Sophomores. But many also take like Chem/lab , physics/lab, Calc and English or the computer course for one semester.” What do you mean by that? How can you apply without finishing all the course requirements? Thanks for your help btw.

Edit: What do you mean some take the courses for one semester*

It all depends what you come in with. If you can pass out of like Calc 1 or writing etc then you should be fine. What I stated above is a typical engineering semester. It’s a lot also at 18 credits or there about. Once you do two semesters your almost there. But you will need to take a few classes in the summer.
Call/email the engineering department and see what’s possible. But please make sure the classes your taking now will transfer Michigan is very picky about the littlest things.

To make sense of what I wrote since it’s 4 math classes as a non campus transfer you would have had to place out of one of them. You can look into a winter transfer not a fall one to make it work so essentially by credit a sophomore. Make sense?

That looks more like a list of courses for a junior level transfer student who will complete two academic years’ worth of courses elsewhere before transferring. However, since Michigan is stingy with transfer credit, such transfer students may effectively be like sophomores who will need three more years because they need to retake many of their courses.
