Questions about transferring

Hi. So first of all, it's awesome that there's a admissions rep on this board. That's kind of who I'm gearing my questions toward, but if anyone else has an idea that would also be great.

Here's the deal. I'm a freshman in a program that has a lot of core requirements, so I'm not really sure if my schedule is going to look anything like the ones that are listed as "competitive" on the website. In fact, the only classes that I think will be recognizable to people from outside my program are an expository writing class, a Spanish class, an Economics class, and a class on Latin American Cultures. However, I'm from Virginia and I took Dual Enrollment Applied Calculus and Environmental Science as a senior, so I'm wondering if those would count towards the Gen Ed requirements. I also have AP credits that my college didn't accept from Euro, US, Gov, and both English exams.

I'm slightly concerned now as well because I read something on another thread about how W&M likes to see people start a new language in college. However, despite getting a 4 on the Spanish AP exam, I'm not yet fluent, and seeing as that is my eventual goal it doesn't make sense to me to abandon the language.

Any thoughts?

Glad you’re interested in transferring.

We do like to see students take courses that are likely to transfer to W&M and we like to see students take a diversity of courses (some math, some English, some science, some social science). However, if your college does not allow for much flexibility in course selection you can certainly let us know that in your application.

Depending on which dual enrollment courses you took (meaning their VCCS course numbers) they may fulfill W&M GERs and the same goes for your AP exams depending on the scores you earned and you can provide that information in your application as well.

We actually do not recommend that students necessarily start a new foreign language in college. We recommend that if prospective transfer students didn’t complete W&M’s foreign language proficiency in high school that they work towards completion of that profiency in college whether that’s starting a new language or continuing their previous one.

Thanks so much for the response! I will definitely mention the inflexibility of my current program in my application essay. This information is very reassuring, thank you.
