questions about transferring

Hi friends!

My name is Lee. I've been a long time lurker, first time poster. I just have a couple of questions regarding transferring. I hope to transfer to either UCLA, UCD, or UCSD.

I graduated high school this year with a 4 in AP Microecon, a 3 in AP Calc, and a 3 in Chem. I took 15 units in the summer. Now, I was wondering if this actually totals up to about 25 units. This current semester I'm taking 24 units which will bring me to 49 units. Given the amount of units I have, is it possible for me to transfer in a year? If so, how can I? How do colleges deal with changing majors after transferring? Can I transfer undeclared? What are the requirements? Sorry, I'm not familiar with the whole transfer system and would like help! Thank you so much!

I scored a 3 on an AP Language test and it gave me 5ish units. Even if you assume each AP class gives you 3 units (which it should at least), you will have more than 60 units to transfer so you will qualify in terms of units.

9 units of AP credit (3 classes @ 3 units each)
15 units summer
24 units fall
12 units (atleast) spring

I suggest you break up the fall semester and throw some units into spring just to lighten your load. Fall is the last semester that UC’s make their decisions upon so it’s better to have a stronger GPA BEFORE they evaluate.

It isn’t too difficult to change majors within the same school. For example, if you’re doing Biology at Davis and you want to do Neurobiology, the switch isn’t as difficult as doing Biology then Engineering because the two are at different schools within Davis. (This may require you to do some digging to find out if the majors you are looking to potentially switch to are in the same school as what you will be applying with).

UC transfers CANNOT transfer as undeclared. They expect you to know what you are doing as you are entering as a “junior.”

Hope this helps.

Thank you for replying!!!
Yes this helped a lot. When you say fall is the last semester that UC’s make their decisions, does that mean doing well in the 24 units I have is “worth” more than doing well in 12 units? Also, how important are major prereq requirements? Do you HAVE to complete all of it or can you complete some when you are at the UC? Thank you so much!!!

I think it is totally possible for you to transfer! what major are you planning to transfer as? i think the major prereqs are extremely important but if you can’t finish them you can take them at your uc. im not sure about this though, maybe someone can clarify this?

Hi! Im actually not sure. Osiq what classes do you think I should drop but should still be competitive transferring? Im taking chem 1a, physics 4a, calc 3, linear algebra, psych, and the 2nd english class required to transfer

You’re going to need to spend some time reading thru the transfer policies for the UC system as a whole, at each UC you are considering, and for majors that you are interested in. This is all readily available online.

There are just too many special cases and conditions for people to give you the general answers you are looking for. For example at UCLA students not admitted to a major in the college of Engineering may not later try to switch into an engineering major, and those not admitted as Econ majors cannot switch to Econ. The UC schools also differ on how many of the prereqs they expect you to have completed.
