Questions about TV in dorm rooms?

My daughter is in a double in Koenig. We are planning to take a TV set with us. Is there a hook-up for cable? Is there a charge for the cable hook-up, and how much is it if there is? If we chose not to pay for cable, can you pick up many channels the old-fashioned way?

There is cable hook-up. Cable runs approx $350 for the school year. Not sure about how many channels using an antenna. Maybe D could split cable cost w/ her roommate.

I wish I got cable in my room!

I think it's unfortunate that Wash U charges for cable & ethernet.

Hi KK, are you enjoying my alma mater Northwestern??

Aside from the $350 expense for cable, I wonder if it is a good idea to have a tv set in the room? Perhaps it's not good to watch TV in the room in lieu of being with friends in the common room, or studying, or doing something else.

What do current students think? Is it good, bad, neutral to have a TV set in the room?

...and, is it the same charge for cable as it is for Wi-Fi, or are they two separate charges?

We definitely want our daughter to access the wireless network, perhaps the TV would be a "lucky-strike-extra."

Ethernet is $131.25 per semester ($262.50 for the year). I'm considering purchasing TV cable for junior son. If he misses a favorite show he downloads the missed TV show to his computer (costly).

Freshmen year S had a rommate who brought TV. They used TV for playing nintendo and watching movies (no cable). Most of the kids on their floor (Lein-1/sub-free) had TVs in the rooms. Most dorms have computer labs and study rooms. S prefers to study and do homework at the library, not his room. Sophomore year he lived in a suite w/three other guys. The TV ended up in the living room, and they all pitched in for cable. Each week the roommates and some neighbors got together to watch Greys Anatomy, so in a way TV helped their dorm social life.

-Indeed I am enjoying it. It’s too bad your daughter didn’t choose the "right" Midwestern College. :)

missmolly - One reason why we're forced to pay extra for ethernet is that ResLife & the school have fought the attempts to "hide" the fee in the housing fee, or charge everyone on campus a "universal technology fee" that would cover everything on campus. Student Union shot that idea down again, last year. As for cable, the university has definitely struck a really bad deal with Charter Cable TV - I will actually be contacting technology departments at other similar universities that do include cable for free (or very cheap) to see what their deals revolve around, and try to talk with ResTech about potential alternatives. The university isn't always the best at negotiating contracts... Just look at the Coke/Cheap Lunch issue from last year. People steal cable in the old dorms anyway, so it's unfair to people in the new dorms.

Student Union?..... Cute name for a student government. LOL

How come students are able to steal cable in the old dorms, rather than the new dorms?

The old dorms have a daisy-chained system of cable - One cable comes into the building, and there's a splitter on each floor that goes out to a few rooms, and then each room's cable loops around to the next room. I won't get into details, but people have been able to take off the protector over the cable jack and watch TV - People do get caught occasionally, and sometimes even break the cable jack, forcing them to pay fines. The new dorms have cable hookups that need to be manually hooked up in order to connect to the system.

Let me restate that students caught stealing cable are forced to pay for the entire semester worth of cable, as well as potentially face judicial committee punishments. Some students take the risk, however.
