Hello CCers!

I have a couple questions regarding the UC personal statements. For UC prompt #1: Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

What should I avoid? I've heard people say avoid sob stories with no resolutions obviously and the point of the essay is to NOT brag about your talents but instead express a moment or event that you just can't live without. Is this correct?

I'm part of a youth group and I'm currently a leader who teaches students about Catholicism and morality. I've been apart of this group my whole life and I'm proud to be a Vietnamese Catholic member. Do I write about it as a whole giving it the form as my personal identity or write about a turning point of it where I actually learn leadership skills and turn my work ethics around? In general this youth group is my identity and I'm passionate about it but I don't know how to sum it up into <500 words.

UC prompt #2: Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?

For this one, is it bad to write the same thing as #1? It feels a little weird to have only one thing in about me to write about because it doesn't express my uniqueness correct?

I'm planning on majoring in engineering at UCSD and I've been building computers for a while now. Would it be a good essay topic? I'm genuinely proud of what I've done but didn't take it to the big leagues where I make profit or like people who create their own programs, get millions of downloads. It originally started out for fun but I soon created a bond with the computer. I've fixed some friends computers but I didn't make a profit (and I don't have a technology job either.) What do you think?

Thanks for your replies if any since this is a longer question thread! Also, if someone doesn't mind messaging me an e-mail if you can proofread my essays, that would be great. If not, it's completely fine. I just need some answers! Help a student out! :)
