Questions about UK universities

I know about the prestigious UK universities like Oxford and Cambridge but are there any other awesome UK universities? And can a US student get Financial aid from a UK university?

Check out LSE, UCL, Imperial, Warwick, and St. Andrews.

You won’t have much luck when it comes to financial aid, though. Still, even overseas tuition isn’t as much as some of the elite American schools.

Can I take out loans and do work study?

Of course you can take out loans. Is it prudent to do so? Depends on your own personal situation.

Financial aid in the UK is not like it is here in the US. Most prestigious schools are public schools that have low (until recently) tuition and thus financial aid programs are not as necessary. Thus, work-study is not big either.

Also remember that many British degree programs are 3 years rather than 4. Though yearly costs may be expensive, if you pursue a social science, you will likely be in school one year less abroad than you will here.

Okay thanks! Oh and one more question, would an African American feel comfortable at a UK university?

Um, why not? Generally speaking, the universities in London have the most diverse student bodies, but universities elsewhere in the UK are racially diverse too. Like, there are awful people all over the world, but UK universities don’t have problems with systematic/institutionalized racism any more than their US counterparts do.

But if you’re really worried about feeling alone or standing out too much, apply to UCL, King’s, or LSE.

^ Thanks! that’s all I needed to know (:

Sorry guys, absolute last answer xD the The Denys Holland Scholarship from the University College London pays the tuition of prospective students in financial hardships, is that only for UK citizens or all applicants?

i just wanted to come in and say a lot of UK universities are good and they are also good at certain subject areas… if you do a google search you can find out the list by subject areas or message me because i found a good site that has helped me a ton!

Before you can get a student visa to study in the UK you have to prove you are able to finance your entire course of study, including tution fees and living costs, right now. In other words, you cannot say you will obtain the money through working in the UK (though most people will automatically get a part time work visa with their student visa. This allows you to work up to 20 hours a week). You have to already have enough money before entering the UK.

Also, the economy is not great right now, so don’t bet on finding a job. Realistically you can’t rely on it.

For specific scholarships you need to email the university concerned. Be aware that any sort of financial aid for foreign undergraduates is extremely rare, so it will be very competitive to get this.

Good luck with your application.

You are not, under any circumstance going to easily get a scholarship to a university in the UK. I would advise you to channel your energy elsewhere
