Questions about USMA and USMAPS

Hey everyone!

I'm really behind on all of my college applications and stuff, in fact I have to turn in my Maryland application in a few days and I'm nowhere near done! But anyways, West Point has been my dream school for a while, but I thought I would never get a chance to go there. A long time ago I heard that you had to have political "connections" to get into West Point, so I gave up my dream of going there without looking any further into what this meant. But recently, my friend just got accepted to the Naval Academy and that got me a little more motivated to check out West Point, and after a little bit of research, I found out that you don't have to have political connections, you just need to send a letter to your senator, etc. even if you don't know them personally.

I honestly don't think I'm West Point material. Their low acceptance rate is scaring me. I slacked my sophomore and junior years, which really brought my GPA down. I'm doing better now as a senior, but I think it's too late. So i was wondering what the average GPA for West Point is? And any of you who have gotten accepted there, could you please tell me a little bit about yourself? Like your GPA, what sports you've done, your SAT scores, or any other special factors that you think gave you an edge towards your acceptance.

I'm still going to try to apply to West Point despite how late it may be and what a weak candidate I consider myself, but I also found out there is a Prep School for West Point. I went to the Prep School site and the link to apply goes to West Point's application instead of a separate Prep School link. So I was wondering about the whole deal with the Prep School and how to get in there. I don't mind having to wait a year at this Prep School before I head on to West Point. In fact, I would actually like it because it would give me some insight before I make my final decision. So if anyone has any information about the Prep School and what one should do to apply there, etc.

And one last thing- actually I'll probably be back here with a few more questions later on, but for now, I'm also in a kind of bad physical situation. Recently I tried out for the basketball team at my school, and I twisted my knee and tore my ACL so now I have to get surgery. The doctor said it takes a few months to heal from the surgery, maybe even up to a year. How can I notify West Point of my situation? Because I'm pretty sure there is some physical test that you have to take and you have to send those scores as part of your West Point application, but I can hardly walk for now, let alone do the mile run, etc. that is required for the test.

Sorry for any typos or grammar mistakes or anything, I don't have time to proofread this or anything, and sorry if I broke any of the rules of this site, I just got a link to one of the threads on this site from Google so I quickly registered and am now posting this. Well anyways, I have to go finish up that Maryland application. Thanks in advance to anyone who is able to answer some of my questions or direct me anywhere where I can find more information.

now take my knowledge at face value it could very well be wrong and im sure that someone on here will get back to you with a better answer but from my experience as a Candidate for 2013 with a Letter of Assurance (means i will be appointed once i get the nomination)

For the prep school application process you apply to USMA and they put you through the application process then if they say wow i really like them, be it sports, or a great essay/interview, but the grades just aren't cutting it then they can give you USMAPS (prep school) so you do nothing different than a normal candidate in that regard except that you will not need a nomination to go to USMAPS

as for the medical problem to apply you are going to have to get medically clead by DoDMERB (Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board) I am pretty sure the ACL is a disqualification but if you can prove that it does not affect you any more - youve had the surgery and you have a normal lifestyle with no hinderance because of your injury - you can probably get a waiver

before you get too far into the process you should check with your local congressperson and senators their deadline for a nomination application could have passed i know mine have

Sometimes, if you are an EXCEPTIONAL candidate, the MOC can find a way to get a late-comer on the nom slate. I saw this happen with a student last year. However, he did not have any DodMerb obstacles. You have a fairly significant obstacle. I would strongly, strongly suggest you do your research, talk to WP, and quit going by what you have "heard" and instead go by the facts. Everyone here has an opinion, but the only one that matters is what WP says/thinks. Good luck to you!

AgentAI - USMAPS is usually offered to a select group of candidates who show exceptional leadership ability but are not academically qualified to attend USMA directly. Candidates do not apply to USMAPS - rather they are identified by USMA admissions when they apply to USMA.

"I don't mind having to wait a year at this Prep School before I head on to West Point. In fact, I would actually like it because it would give me some insight before I make my final decision."

While some candidates decide that USMA is not for them while they are at the prep school, the intent is not for candidates to "try it and see if they like it". Admissions aims to offer USMAPS slots to candidates who are committed to attending USMA.

Good luck!
