I'm a resident in Texas and I've been thinking about whether I should go to UT or go to a LAC. I have some questions for you guys.

I've heard that Austin, for the most part, is pretty liberal. Is this true? I've heard someone else describe the campus as "open," meaning doesn't lean on the liberal side nor the conservative side. Which is true? How do people on campus generally react to gays/lesbians? Are they accepted and are they frowned upon?

How does the campus look? I've heard the campus is "90% concrete." Are there any park-like areas? (One is my factors is that the college has at least a fairly pretty campus)

What are some of the best things about UT? The worst things?

UT's very open to gays and is a pretty liberal place.

As for parks, I think austin touches nice on this. Austin itself has lots of parks but UT also has lots of park-like areas. I'm a summer freshmen and its one of the things I really like about the campus, all the trees and courtyardish kinds of areas, its extremely pretty. You should come for a visit or something if you can.

UT is open to gays/lesbians and is an overall liberal area. Since most of us will walk to school it is great that UT has trees all over campus. It makes the heat a little less intense.

UT is, as others say, really open. It is VERY liberal for Texas. Never before I had I seen so many "Kerry/Edwards" and "Republicans for Voldemort" bumper stickers in Texas.

But you have to visit! It's nowhere near NYU terms of concrete. There's a long quad that extends in front of the Tower, and when I visited, there was a class being held right off the quad (how cool is that?). It's gorgeous---you can see straight down to the Texas State Capitol (from whence the mooolah comes to UT). The student admissions office is surrounded by these huge, gorgeous trees and it's very, very green.

Austin's wonderful, really bohemian in a way. I felt like I had just been plopped into Northern California--rolling hills, gorgeous lakes.

I've only seen UT itself and it has a lot of nice scenary, trees, not too many wide open spaces though. Seemed kinda cramped to me compared to UC Berkeley, but then again Berkeley was almost like a forest out there. Yes very liberal. I need to explore Austin when I get down there.

It would be a lie to say that UT doesn't have a liberal majority. There is a very outspoken minority of conservatives, but it's safe to assume when you talk to a UT student that they're liberal. However, even the conservatives aren't hardcore rightwingers. I think it was last year during the Pride Week activities that the Campus Conservatives were hosting an event where a fake priest was fake marrying gay couples on campus.

That said, UT is VERY open to gays/lesbians. I was in a freshmen-geared women's literature class, and there was a gay male student in the class who from the very first day felt totally safe and comfortable discussing his boyfriend and his orientation with our professor and the rest of the class. No one raised their eyebrows or rolled their eyes or anything. It was the same as if he had said, "By the way, I really like waffles."

As for the way the campus looks... It took me some gettin'-used-to. :( But then again, I'm from Eastern Texas where there are massive forrests everywhere. UT does have a lot of trees and landscaping, but it seems pathetic compared to the pine trees I'm used to. And probably the reason they say it's so concrete is because the entire campus is done in a Southwest pueblo style, with orange ceramic tile roofs and concrete-ish looking walls. But after a while I started seeing the campus as pretty.

hi guys,
Sorry if my question is off-topic, but it is my "question about UT" lol.
Where can I find a microwave on campus so I can heat up my lunch? I spent half a day at the Union Building but couldn't find one, only restaurants were there. I'll be living off campus and bringing my lunch. It would be hard if there's no microwave around, 'cause I can't afford to eat out every single day...:(

There are microwaves to heat up things in the campus stores inside Jester Center and Kinsolving, I think. San Jac might have one too, but I've never been in their food area.
