Questions about visit

My parents and I have decided to travel down south to visit Bama since it is my number one choice school for many reasons. Any advice on when to visit this summer? This will be my only visit until applying next summer/fall so I want to get the most out of it.

If late summer, after students have returned to campus, is an option, that’s what I’d suggest.

Thanks that’s what I was thinking, it wasn’t my preference to visit during the summer because I want to get some idea of how student life is there and everything

Classes start Wed August 21, and most students return to campus a few days before.

We were there last year on the first or second day of classes. We did not actually sit in in any classes since they were all meeting for the first time, but it was nice to be there with all the students on campus, but also during my DD’s summer vacation.

You might want to visit during a Bama Bound session because there will be some additional students around.

Will you be applying to honors? If so, let us know. We’ll tell you who to contact in Honors.

Hi,

Contact the local recruiter in your area. One of the kind posters on here suggested I do so and it really worked out. Not only did we go on the tour, but she arranged for us to meet an admissions rep and she scheduled a dorm tour. While we were there the admissions rep, Ms. Margaret Ila Christian scheduled an extra tour for my daughter in her area of interest. Everyone was so nice and attentive. I think that if you schedule the tour and let them know you will get personal attention. I am a graduate of the University of Miami and my oldest went to Florida State University. I didn’t think I could be swayed very easily, but I left there thinking that the place is absolutely awesome. Have fun on your visit. :)

Summer school for Summer II will be in July 2 - August 2. Going during a BB and Summer II in session will help with the campus being a bit more “active”.

It was very active while we were visiting during our BB visit June 9-11. However, much of it was from various middle school and high school camps going on during that week. It was state week for some program that Alabama does called “Boys State” and “Girls State”. Then there was a huge peewee football camp going on. My D almost died when I told her we saw them all going into the Tutwiler Dorm building. The thought of middle school boys being in the girls dorm that she will be calling home I guess “grossed her out”. Also saw a soccer clinic going on. The ladies golf camp started mid week as well. UA football was “in” as we saw some of the players when we visited the athletic building to see the trophies.

Be aware that with all of these camps and Bama Bound going on during your visit that you may not be able to tour the actual dorm buildings or rooms. D and her future roommate wanted to tour Tut but could not. I’m pretty sure they won’t let anyone just go in and tour RCS or Lakeside while there are kids there. Early College is in session and that is high school kids living on campus and they do keep it secure from what I’ve been told. You can ask when scheduling your tour about seeing any housing that might be open for a tour while you are there.

My son will be attending the SITE program in July and we have a tour scheduled for the Saturday after the program. He will have, of course, seen the campus, but his dad and I would like to go on the tour ourselves!
We have been in contact with Susan Alley who is kindly putting together a visit with the Honors College and the School of Engineering. My son has the stats for the Presidential (fingers crossed for that 2014 announcement that it is staying the same!)
Is there anything else we should set up while we are there?

Maryjay60, That’s great that you have been able to schedule a tour/visit after your son participates in SITE. We did the same thing 2 summers ago, and now my son is preparing to begin at UA this fall! One cautionary comment in hopes that you can learn from our experience. My son had a great time at SITE, made friends that he has kept in touch with, etc. But, the last night, they all stayed up talking and he was exhausted by the time we picked him up. So, when we met with professors and the honors college, he really wasn’t as energetic as he otherwise would have been. So, tell your son to get some sleep the last night of SITE!

Thanks, SpaceCoastMom! Good idea to mention SLEEPING to my son! He loves to stay up very late even without the temptation of new friends to hang out with!

Will someone please explain this Bama Bound thing to me? I always see people talking about it. I would like to mention that I am actually only going into my junior year next year but I am very interested in Alabama because of the OOS scholarships and the strong Communications programs because I want to major in PR. I live all the way in Michigan but I have my heart set on attending a southern school so I have to start touring this early so I can see all the ones I want to be able to see.

Bama Bound sessions are orientation sessions for incoming freshman. I posted the dates for the remaining sessions above.

Even though you’re a rising senior, I thought it might be nice if you toured Bama while one of thse BB sessions was going on so that you’d have more of a feel/taste for the school when there are more people on campus.

Oh okay thank you for explaining!

Before making any travel arrangements, be sure to check to see if your chosen visiting dates has available spots for the Campus Tour.

It sounds like you’ll be applying to honors. IF so…

first set up the campus tour online…try for an early morning time! Don’t bother with the “info session”, you’ll get that info here pretty much on the Alabama forum on College Confidential which is VERY active.*
