questions about weekends ...

Okay, D's dad went to RH many ... um, well, awhile ago. <g> We no longer live in the area, after graduating w/ Ph.D. (me, master's) from Purdue, we've headed south ... to FL. So, I'm a hoosier. I grew up with IU vs Purdue friendly rivalry in our family. I don't talk to my IU uncle ... just kidding. Anyway, D's considering Biomedical engineering, and we hadn't really considered RH because of how small it is ... frankly. My D's grown up with SEC/ACC sports ... and she's huge into the wanting a football atmosphere, not for the partying believe it or not, but just because she loves watching and going to games. So, we've only looked at schools large enough to offer that kind of campus climate. Do RH kids attend either IU or Purdue football/basketball games on weekends. And, I lived in Indy, West Lafayette for several years. Terre Haute was never an area that impressed me. If we look at RH (and being only 20 percent female), will she find a dead weekend campus, a lot of midwest kids heading out to home and hearth ... that kind of thing? Also, I see there are sororities and frats ... any where "drinking" (wink/wink) is not the huge thing. We're fairly conservative; in fact, D's probably more conservative that I am ... and she's not into that kind of partying.</g>

So ... I know RH has impecable academic credentials ... what about the intangibles? Anyone currently a student want to tackle that ... would be greatly appreciated.

zebes, who might give D address of IU uncle who still lives in Indy ... I guess. :)

I'll try to tackle it for you. The thing I love most about Rose is the atmosphere. Even considering its a small school focusing on academics, we still have strong sports programs. All the games are free for students and last year most of my floor went to a lot of the games together. As far as going to games at other schools, we had a big Purdue fan and a big IU fan on my floor last year. I don't know for sure if they went to any games, but I do know people visited both schools during the year. The city of Terre Haute doesn't impress a lot of us either, but there is plenty to do on campus. Rose sponsors some sort of entertainment almost every weekend and the events are always free to students. The Performing Arts Series (Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology - 2008-09 Performing Arts Series) has some cool events this year including Grant from Mythbusters as well as more traditional performing arts. Student groups also have comedians and other entertainment throughout the year and the Drama Club has two plays and a musical put on by the students. As far as fraternities and sororities, Greek life at Rose is different than at other colleges, and I'm sure your daughter can find an organization that fits her. I hope that answers all your questions. Let me know if you have any others.
