S is interested in Muhlenberg, and we are thinking of visiting. However due to my work schedule, hoping to "pre-screen" before committing to travel as we can only do a few road trips.
- Would you describe Muhlenberg as an "A/A-" school or "B/B+"?
- Any information on the sciences? (S will probably major in math or computer science, not quite sure)
- Are profs available to students?
- Is environment collarborative or competitive among students?
- Does the male/female ratio impact student life, or is hardly felt?
- How big is Greek life?
- Overall impression of the school?

In case anyone who reads this is familiar with Skidmore, would love thoughts on there as well. Or maybe some comparisons if you have any.

It’s better to visit now since the admissions department looks favorably upon those who have visited, then applied. There is a brand new science building that is gorgeous and very technologically progressive. Profs are VERY available to students. I remember my daughter once telling me about a class where someone was late, and the prof told one of the other students to call the late student and find out if they were coming to class. My daughter was an A student in high school, but was admitted to one of the honors programs that challenged her very adequately.

Academically Muhlenberg is competitive. As Teriwtt said, there are honors programs for exceptional students.

Our student is a Math Major. The Math and Comp Sci departments are smaller than others and there are many benefits in this. Easier access and more focused support from professors - including interesting research and work opportunities with less competition for them. One of our student’s favorite profs is in the Comp Sci dept.

Are profs available to students? 1000% yes.

Is environment collaborative or competitive among students? Collaborative.

Does the male/female ratio impact student life, or is hardly felt? May be an advantage for guys. But overall, it doesn’t seem so different than other places.

How big is Greek life? Not very.

Overall impression of the school. Great programs, great people, great school.

Skidmore is comparable. Muhlenberg’s artsy people are mostly in theatre. Skidmore is great for musicians and probably has a slightly more artsy vibe overall. Berg probably has stronger sciences. Having spent a lot of time in each area, while Saratoga is quaint, I think the Lehigh Valley has more going for it - especially with easy access to Philly & NYC and better weather.

She should be eligible for President’s Scholarship and an Honors Program. She may come close to a $15-$20k award. In fact Muhlenberg will often give a non-binding ‘early read’ for potential scholarship recipients if you visit campus and have an interview - that’s something I would highly recommend if you haven’t already visited.

Q: How do I apply for Muhlenberg’s Merit Scholarships?

A: When you submit your application for admission to Muhlenberg College, you are automatically considered for all of the merit scholarships that the college offers. If any additional information is required, the Office of Admis*sions will contact you directly. Muhlenberg College enrolls approximately 125 Merit Scholarship recipients. The scholarships range from $1,000-$16,000. However, the total Merit from all Muhlenberg sources is capped at $20,000. Merit Scholarship recipients typically have combined Critical Reading and Math SAT scores of over 1300 and rank in the top 10% of their high school class.

HockeyMomma:
Let’s take them in your order…
Muhlenberg is an A- to B+ type school.
Very strong in the sciences, many students are premed.
Prof’s are more available at Muhlenberg than any school we looked at.
Students are collaborative but all are strong students competing for good grades.
Male/female ratio isn’t that big a deal here.
Greek life exists, but not to the extent it dominates the social scene.
Overall impression is… you should make the time to visit. Muhlenberg is a special school.
Great people who will care about your son, challenge your son, nurture your son and teach
your son in a very special environment. Best of luck.
