questions and some rambling...

So like a lot of you guys I love Hopkins and I can't wait until March 31. (The anxiety is killing me!!! I check this forum, the Hopkins message board, and Hopkins Interactive every single day...it's quite sick.) I don't have school on the 31st so I'll probably sit in front of my computer all day until I get the e-mail - hopefully it'll be good news. If not I'll just cry, grab a tub of ice cream, and spend the rest of the day watching season 1 of Lost...or 24. I haven't really decided yet. To all of you that got in ED: what was the subject of the e-mail? Does anyone have a copy of the ED rejection letter? I'd like to prepare myself for the worst as best as I can...hah...especially since my SAT score and GPA is mediocre at best.
Speaking of preparing for the worst- is it possible to get rejected as a high school senior, reapply as a transfer applicant the following year, and get accepted? rare?

some questions for AdmissionsDaniel:
- If an applicant attends an open house and makes a campus visit, will that info be a part of the applicant's file? Will student interest be considered at all?
-What's the craziest thing an applicant has ever done? ...like has an applicant ever sat outside the admissions office with a cardboard sign begging for acceptance? What if someone did do that? What do you think would happen? Just wondering.
- I'm really not trying to make excuses for my not so stellar SAT score/grades but as the only child of a single parent whose first language isn't English, I’ve dealt with more than my peers. For example, during midterms I had to spend my time figuring out complicated forms. Whenever anything goes wrong (feels like everyday something does), I have to take care of it. I quit the two things that I loved- fh and lax (right after I got moved up to varsity) when my mom asked me to because the team camps and travel teams were getting too costly. and the list goes on...I know Hopkins looks at the applicant as an individual which is why I thought about asking my guidance counselor to include these things in my rec but I didn't because I don't want to discredit my mom's parenting skills (she's the best), I couldn't open up to a guidance counselor I had never met before, I have a pride issue (character flaw), didn't want to be the pitied kid, and I didn't want to sound like a whiny dummy making excuses. So my question is...should i have just sucked it up and asked him to write those things in my rec?

thank you!
This is super long…sorry about that.

uh if you get in, i believe the subject of the email may be something along the lines of "congratulations from Johns Hopkins University." this is what the ED'ers got.
and good luck, u really seem to want this.

swingline21, since AdmissionsDaniel is swamped with reading applications right now (not sure if he is checking regularly) I thought I would take a stab at responding to your questions. I am sure my answers will be similar if not exactly what he would say...

First, you have to chill out.

Second, (and I know this will make you freak out even more), the Admissions Office has not yet determined when Admissions decisions will be released and emails sent. It will be the last week in March, but no final decisions has yet to be made. And also, the emails/letters ED students received are different than what RD applicants will get.

Third, yes if denied as a freshman applicant you may re-apply the next year as a transfer student, but the competition is very tough.

Fourth, at Hopkins attendance at on-campus or off-campus programs is not "tracked" and not considered in the Admissions review. "Interest" is a miscellaneous factor that all adcoms always will consider - but it will never be a determinig factor. Clearly, the adcoms want students who want to attend their school but that does not weigh over all the other factors.

Fifth, the "crazy things" are either urban legends or have happened elsewhere. If a student did such a thing, the adcoms would probably laugh and then go on with their day. Stunts do not get you accepted to college.

Sixth, you have to chill out and put faith in the Admissions Committee. Yes the adcoms take the complete picture of the applicant -- but know now that there is nothing you can change. Just relax. (Daniel would not be so casual in his response to your last question, but he will not comment on applicant's chances so really there is no answer.)

Hope this helps.

6 for 6 - great response laxfan -- exactly what I would have written.

...just curious, but what is the craziest thing an applicant has ever done? I read somewhere that someone sent a boat to Harvard to show off his carving skills...

Do I get a bonus for interest in the campus if I can see it from my high school?

do I get a bonus if I have a giant Hopkins poster handing in my room? ;)

Do I get a $$$ bonus for the number of applications I read? NO! So, sorry no bonuses for you all.
:-)

for RD last year, they basically did the same. the subject is like CONGRATULATIONS if you got in. and...meh...if you didn't. it was like that for ED as well.

I got my responses at around 2-3 for both ED and RD
