hmm. I see. Actually, my high school is only 7% asian so 11% at SLO I wouldn’t mind at all.

Cept, I need to get accepted first. =P

7% of 500 kids is different than 11% of 20,000. thats a lot more asians lol

How useful/practical is a bike for getting around campus? My daughter has requested Cerro Vista for housing. Is it worth bringing a bike, or do most students end up walking between classes and housing?

My son didn’t take a bike at first because he thought the hill up & down from Cerro Vista would impractical to ride. I drove his bike down on parents’ weekend because he changed his mind. He rides it every day to class. There’s a large closet in each Cerro Vista apartment that is big enough to store bikes over the breaks if the students don’t want to leave them outside.

A bike is definitely the way to go not only to get around campus but, SLO as well. My son lives in Muir and has had no problem with theft.

I would definitely recommend bringing a bike if you can. A mountain bike is probably better than say a beach cruiser due to the hills and all, but any bike works for getting around. It’s great for riding into town whenever you want or getting around campus quickly. Also, there are a ton of places to keep your bike around Cerro Vista.

Is anyone aware of problems with cell phone coverage in the SLO area? I’m debating between AT&T and Verizon for our family plan and want to make sure the service I pick will work for our daughter at Cal Poly next year.

Unless you want an iPhone go with Verizon. We have AT&T for everything and it sucks, particularly cell phone connectivity.

Verizon is great! My daughter’s service in the dorms and on campus is great … getting her to use it call home once in a while is another story … :)

cept when she needs something . . . :)

Definitely go with version. If you have AT&T you may have to open your window to get service or you may not even get service in your dorm room or you’ll have to walk around to find a signal.

AT&T does not work on campus.

What about Sprint??

I’ve heard Sprint is okay.

i have t-mobile (not the best) and it works well there when i visited the campus.

I saw an article that AT&T had installed new 3G towers in SLO and they went active on 1/14/10. It would be intersting to hear if anyone with AT&T, such as gotpeter, noticed any improvment in the past two weeks.

really they did?
i’d really like it if at&t worked down in SLO because it’d be such a hassle.
has it worked better for anybody?

I was on campus on Saturday and my iphone worked just fine from the pizza parlor, several places on campus and from downtown. I’m not sure about the dorms. I hope so because that is what my son has and we do not want to change.

My son has an iPhone as well and has found connectivity inconsistent and coverage spotty around campus; typical of AT&T’s service throughout the country. He loves his iPhone though so he puts up with it.

AT&T does not work at poly canyon at, fyi
