Questions? Ask a rising junior at AU

When I was in high school, this forum served as an invaluable resource for me as I was gathering information about the colleges I was interested in. Now that I’ve been in college for a few years, I’d love to return the favor.

I’m currently a rising junior at AU and would love to answer any questions you might have. I’m double majoring in political science and CLEG (Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics and Government).

I apologize, however, if I don’t respond immediately. I am interning full-time in DC this summer so I will only be able to respond to posts in the evenings.

kewl… did you know what you wanted to major in or did u go in undecided? How easy it to change majors?

Do you happen to know if Anderson is air conditioned?
Thanks!

All dorms (all buildings, for that matter) are air conditioned.

Thanks for the info–my son will be glad.
Do you know the answer to the question I posted about AP credits?

James -

I went in as a political science major and have stayed a political science major, though I added another major my freshman year (CLEG - Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics, and Government). It is incredibly easy to add or change majors, and most students here do. Additionally, you’ll find that most students here double major.

If my S is tripled in Leonard, do you think there will be room for stackable storage bins or drawers? Do you think the anti-bedbug bedding protection being advertised is necessary? Have you ever heard that this was a problem at AU?
Thanks

My d. is in Leonard (an staying there another year!) She is incredibly bug-phobic, and with good reason, as when she gets bit by anything, she swells up. No bugs reported. No bedding protection.

When she was tripled at the beginning of last year, they didn’t really have a space problem; there is a lot of closet space, and the three of them were incredible well organized.

Do you think it is necessary for triples to have additional bin/drawer storage? Is there room for it ?
thanks

“If my S is tripled in Leonard, do you think there will be room for stackable storage bins or drawers? Do you think the anti-bedbug bedding protection being advertised is necessary? Have you ever heard that this was a problem at AU?”

There should be room for at least one stackable storage bin since at least one set of beds will be lofted. If they want more space, they can request for the third bed to be lofted as well and then they will have all of the space underneath it to put things such as storage bins underneath.

I did not have anti-bedbug bedding, nor did I ever have any bedbug problems at AU while I was in the dorm (just moved out after 2 years of living in the dorms). Once in awhile my dorm had a couple of bugs find their way inside, but there was never a serious bug problem.

My recommendation would be to move into the dorm, see how things are and then go to the Target in Columbia Heights to buy what you need (it’s right by AU. You can take a bus and get there in about 20-25 minutes, or drive there in about 15-20).

Hi, what job opportunities do you think you will have after double majoring in CLEG and political science (because if I go to American that’s exactly what I would do)?

The job opportunities that you’ll have is almost entirely reliant on what you decide to do with your four years at AU. I’m also a political science and CLEG major, as are many others. Most of the AU population double majors and almost everyone here exceeds both academically and otherwise. So the short answer is that you can enter any field you want with Political Science and CLEG.

It’s important while you are here to take advantage of the internships available (especially utilize careerweb, the internship database AU has). Many students intern every semester, or more, and have a pretty impressive resume by the time they graduate.

As you go along, you’ll figure out what you want to do. For instance, I want to work in public health in the area of tobacco control or cancer prevention/advocacy. So I started with an internship on the Hill and I’m now interning for a tobacco control organization here in DC. Interning is a great way to network and build up relationships with people in DC so that when it is time to find a job, you can utilize those relationships to get you in the door.

Hope that helps!

Yeah that does thanks for the great information.

I have another question: Does AU of a marching band and if so how good is it?

Rising Junior - would you be available to give a prospective student a tour on 8/17? Or know anyone who would? We found out too late that there are only information sessions available that day…

I do not think AU has a marching band. However, they do have a pep band.

Oh ok thanks I would rather do a pep band.
