DaRaverLA

Thanks a bunch for your insight! I know where I'll be spending my birthday.

i am also curious as GLM225 about the job prospects after graduating from UCLA. I might do a graduate degree or something but would you have to move to the company's central location or are the jobs LA based?

Also, what do you mean by "body shop"?? thanks

I'm assuming its a strip club. I don't think faustianpact would want to spend his birthday at a place that fixes cars.

ah cool. cuz i was just playing Need for speed Underground 2 and I thought he was referring to that kind of "body shop."

btw, is that strip club near UCLA or something?

DaRaverLA, do you know if HSEAS sends out "provisional" acceptance letter to transfer students? The reason is because I heard that HSEAS invites selected transfer students to their orientation. From what I know, if you recieve the invitation, it is an early sign of your admissions.

hi daraverla , i PM'ed you a while ago.did you ever get it or should i send another one?
thanks a lot

could you evualute my stats?!

THANK YOU!

i think somehow our dear daraverla has disappeared

Jurily: Sorry, I am back ^^

"hi daver im an intl from hong kong, i heard that there're a whole lota hong kong ppl (or chinese intls) at ucla, is that true? and im accepted as a pre-poli sci major, how difficult (or easy) for me to change major in case i find it not suitable for me? and hows the class size? is there a huge difference between goin to a private college and a public one (im an intl so the total fees are more or less the same)"

To answer your question, actually, my freshman roomate was a Canadian Jew who grew up in Hong Kong. And through him, I met many Hong Kong students. There are indeed many Chinese internationals.

Within letters and science college, you can change your major as long as you maintain B average (GPA: 3.0). However, changing your major outside the scope of college (poli sci -> computer engineering) you need to have about 3.2.

And as far as the class size is concerned, as I have mentioned previously, there are many classes with fewer than 15 students at UCLA. I mean many classes. And the benefits of going to private school over those of going to public school would really depend on your natural preferance.

What kind of person are you? Are you a kind of person who would thrive in a big urban campus environment in which you would find an array of opportunities in clubs, organizations, and social circles? Or are you a kind of person who would enjoy studying and hanging out in a close, yet small, circle of friends?

Honestly, I think you have very, very good chance of getting into UCLA via transfer. Actually, for that matter, you have a pretty good shot at UC Berkeley as well. (not Haas, though. It is virtually impossible to get into the Haas program via transfer for some reason)

Not just because of your physical ailments, but mainly because of your excellence in school work as demonstrated by the high GPA.

Good luck.

I am sorry but I am not quite familiar with what HSEAS stands for. Care to explain a little further?

"btw, is that strip club near UCLA or something?"

The club is actually located in Sunset Strip, about 5 minutes away by car.

Remember the "2 for 1" deal I talked previously.

And there is another good "dance club" (or "strip bar") on La Cienega and Beverly near the Beverly Hills Mall.

"i am also curious as GLM225 about the job prospects after graduating from UCLA. I might do a graduate degree or something but would you have to move to the company's central location or are the jobs LA based?"

Most of the jobs you would get from UCLA are located in LA area, so there is no need for you to transfer to the central location, unless you explicitly request such transfer.

sorry, it was actually HSSEAS or Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. If you recieved an invitation to orientation, you are most likely to be admitted to HSSEAS. I was just curious because a few of my friends got this invitation to orientation and they claim they got admitted early. Can you clarify?

This is so true about not having a car---not just in SoCal; but the northeast, too. So many kids come out here for "The Ivies" and never get around. They leave believing Cambridge/New Haven?Providence and Harlem constitute "The Colonies". No benefit to going far from home if you're just gonna sit in a dorm.

i have another question. Why is it that the UCLA education system is less reputable than berkeley? Also, is it true that the students at LA tend to be more fashion-conscious? Are people more affected there because of the proximity to hollywood?

I am sorry but I dont understand. Are you currently a junior in HS? Is that why you are mentioning "early" here?

If so, then I really have no clue regarding the UCLA's early recruiting process.

"i have another question. Why is it that the UCLA education system is less reputable than berkeley? Also, is it true that the students at LA tend to be more fashion-conscious? Are people more affected there because of the proximity to hollywood?"

UC Berkley is indeed a "better" school than UCLA, despite all the propagandistic statements about the quality of UCLA education in comparison to that of UC Berkeley, in terms of "academic reputation". As far as the actual reasons behind it, I can only refer to the long-held tradition of academia at UC Berkeley.

And to answer you second question, no, not at all. While I was a student at UCLA, I haven gotten any impression that UCLA students are more or less fashion-conscious than your average nextdoor neighbor. If anything, I would characterize UCLA students as more "casual" people with simple sweatshirts and a pair of jeans.

If you are concerned about UCLA student being "shallow", dont. It is not as bad as it is often made out to be. Most UCLA students can be categorized as children of middle class working family.

So if i got in under a pre-major that means im not in that major yet? can you explain the process? and a degree in something econ related...what kind of job does that usually land, and paying what? is that job always at a risk of being termianted due to downsizing? thanks. and btw does ucla give free trans. to the rose bowl for football games?
