How much LaTex do you learn in EGR 53L?

Or is it mostly MatLab, and how is the workoad?

Thank you!

Mostly Matlab; LaTeX skeletons are posted for each lab, so you will learn how to process the files as well as certain aspects (equations, tables, figures, arrays; that kind of thing). I'll let others discuss the workload :)

Workload is about 1 recitation assignment and 1 lab per week. Expect each to take 2-3 hours from start to finish.

Thank you for your reply.

We got our first lab on Unix and LaTex. It seems like it'll take 5-6 hours for me to complete (excluding the pre-read of the lab).

About the textbooks, we are using Intro to matlab 7 for engineers and Applied Numerical Methods w/ Matlab. By friday, we are supposed to read 3 chps of Chapra books and 1 of Palm book.

When you were in EGR 53L, how were the readings? Are we suppose to just skim it or experiment it using MatLab? I kind of think it's a lot of reading but they didn't look too long.

i think i just used the books as references / skimmed when necessary

(hopefully Dr G doesnt go back and change my grade for that...)

Yeah I never really read the chapters. They're just used for reference because Dr. G does a good enough job teaching everything without reading it before.

As far as workload, each Lab/ Rec took me between 3-6 hrs.

awesome, i didn't retain half of what i read in those chapters...so no need to reread?

yeah, no need to reread. I think the purpose of reading them is to expose you to the material so you've at least seen the stuff before when it comes up in lecture.

Honestly I find that the best way to learn Matlab was always to code, debug and repeat. I also found EGR53 to be one of the most enjoyable classes that I have taken as an engineer. The workload was quite a bit (I'd often take an entire day to do a lab if I wasn't getting it) but once I got it I knew I was right. Oh and after the labs I always felt prepared for the tests.

So labs can sometimes be frustrating but the class is cool.

seek out the TAs instead of being frustrated... it might keep you in pratt :-)
