Is Econ 51D material absolutely essential for Econ 55D? I'm planning a minor in economics, and Econ 51D conflicts with my main courses for Fall 2007. If this happens again in Spring, do you think I'll be allowed to take Econ 55D instead? (I've never taken Econ AP) Basically although it should definitely be helpful, do you need things learned in Econ 51D to understand Econ 55D?

Thank you

From my experience, I didn't need it at all. I had AP credit, but the material in my 55 class was very self contained.

However, I still doubt they will let you take it without 51. Good luck.

I don't think they'll let me skip 51D either. I guess I should just wait and see what happens in Spring. Though if it didn't conflict in the fall, I would have had a perfect schedule, well perfect enough...

I found the economics department to be very flexible in terms of letting me take 110 and 105 out of order, 55 simultaneously with 110, and 105 simultaneously with 139 -- they were clear that I could not skip any of them, but they did let me take them out of order. I had a friend who took 55, 105, and 110 simultaneously. This was after we'd had 51 to prove ourselves -- and we had done okay -- so that may prove to be a sticking point.

In addition, another factor causing them to be more lenient towards us was that we both wanted to major in economics but were declaring very late, so we had a hurry-up aspect to our academic careers.
