On the USAFA admissions website, there is a profile of the class of 2009. I had a hard time interpreting what some of it meant...

Applicants –9601
Candidate Pool – 6809
Qualified Candidates – 1928
Offers of Admission – 1746
Total Admitted – 1390

What do they mean by Qualified Candidates? At what point are you determined to be a Qualified Candidate? Why would a Qualified Candidate not receive an offer of admission? And where do the extra 350 slots go between Offers of Admission and Total Admitted? Is that the group of people who accept offers from other academies or another institution? Sorry, I know it's sad that I don't understand...

9601 people opened a file to apply.
6809 of those that take the online prequestionaire were considered to be qualified based on leadership potential.
1928 received nominations.
1746 were given an appointment.
1390 accepted the appointment.

Qualified means you have the minimum requirements, but you still need a nomination. The 350 people that decline go to other colleges, other academies, or flat out decide this isn't for them.

You're here to learn this stuff and to understand, we're here to help. Don't be sorry.

As for altitude adjustment, my 2nd day here when we had our first AFT I ran a 13:28 and puked for a good 2 minutes. End of basic I ran a 10:26, last Wed I ran a 10:42 (no running between the two of them). So, the altitude is huge for me, I came from sea level, and I was well reminded by the air here.

NYker06, you are making all sorts of ASSumptions here, but since you are a self-admitted a** then I guess that is understandable. Please do not use these forums if you plan on being rude and derogatory. It's immature.

Moving on, :) I have yet another question. I was reading some posts from a while back and I read something about sponsor families. Can anyone explain a little more about that? I had never heard of that before...

what drives you to come into an internet forum and make dumb comments?

secondly, if it is so fun for you, i would suggest being stupid in a forum that isnt made up of mostly tough minded people. you'll get a better reaction.

now that we are past that, did you know of anyone who went up early to get used to the altitude?

I already got my reactions from you guys and if you're so strong minded why do you feel threatened by me? Haha curse and try to play mom all you want, but I don't have to play Mr.Nice Guy all the time. It gets boring.

It takes a while to get used to the altitude. Some people try comming early, but I'm not sure it helps much...unless you show up a month early.

There are two types of weekends here, blue and silver. A blue weekend means that the entire weekend is your own personal time. Silver weekends include some sort of mandatory military duty, i.e. parades, inspections, training, briefings etc.

Well, I see we have a negative attention seeker...There is that nice "Ignore" feature here isn't there?

"why do you feel threatened by me?" ROFLMAO! Do you seriously think that anyone who has been through BCT feels threatened by you, on an online forum no less?...HAHAHA...Don't worry, we don't feel threatened, just a bit annoyed by your immaturity.

Sponsor families -- these are the most wonderful people in the world! When you attend USAFA, and assuming you don't live in Colorado Springs, the Academy will assign you a sponsor family who becomes your surrogate Mom and Dad. When you have a weekend off (See Blue weekend above), and want a place to hang out, arrange it with your Sponsor parents -- they stand ready to serve....you! Also, say you need a ride to the airport -- guess who is likely to be there for you? We had lunch with my son's sponsor family on PW -- I think we will be forever grateful. Finally, not sure if your loved one is doing ok? Sometimes a Mom to sponsor Mom conversation can reveal a lot.
BTW, some sponsor families have multiple kids and/or have been in that role for many years. God bless 'em!

Sponsor families are especially nice if they have a big screen TV and a second refrigerator!
Concerning the altitude. There has been some discussion of that before, but the information that seems the most scientific may not accurately describe anyone's personal experience. Our son was in Colorado Springs almost two weeks before BCT and I think that helped a lot. It probably doesn't help enough to be worth the expense unless you have plans for that time (our son attended a Christian leadership conference in Manitou Springs). My personal experience is about the fourth day at altitude I feel a definite boost in energy. Don't know if others would agree with that or not. Also, most scientific research considers high altitude to begin at 8,000 feet - the Academy is just a little over 7,000.

AFAbound, on the academy admissions website (academyadmissions.com), there is an online tour you can take that will show you more about the campus. If you select the dorm, which is just to the right of the chapel, you can see some pictures of the cadet rooms. They typically have two beds, two desks, two closet spaces, a chair, a counter, sink, and mirror. They are actually fairly nice. That's where we stayed during seminar and it seemed like they aren't bad to live in at all. The only bad thing is that they have REALLY long hallways that stretch on for what seems like a mile. ;)

Ive seen that before, I'm just interested in seeing how cadets place their things like drawers and closets, as weird as that sounds. Thank you though, i think I'll take another look at that though.

Go to youtube.com......search for Air Force Academy. There are several clips of cadets rooms. And you can see what some of the things they do in and to the rooms. Enjoy

What does RTB stand for? I found that a lot on some of the older posts. Also, I am taking six AP classes this year. Does your freshman year at USAFA feel similar to that? I have a lot on my plate this year in hopes that it will help me transition into the Academy if I do get an appointment.

hornetguy, are you planning on posting those pictures on CC or are you giving them through PM?

RTB=Red Tag B@stards, originally the class of '62, but it caught on with all red classes (current red class being 2010). Red classes are usually more mischievious.

It depends how well you study. If you make good use of your time, you should have no problems. Hornetguy is ahead and flying high, while I go day-to-day and am doing ok. It depends on your use of time. (I surf the net and CC too much!) The core chemistry class is usually the one that kills 4 degrees.
