Thanks, hornetguy. I certainly hope so. And I'm thinking that it doesn't hurt to have 5 brothers. ;) What is this about a ball? Do you actually get to dance?

Yep...some freshmen think they're dumb, but others have a lot of fun...I personally thought it was a lot of fun. :)

I thought it was really funny watching some of the cadets dance at the end of summer seminar, in their uniforms and everything. Whatever you have to do to have fun, though. I hope that's me in a few years.

Just wait until you go to a ball...it's so weird at first, because EVERYONE is dressed the same...and they're all trying to dance in service dress...it's pretty funny...especially when they bust out the electric slide. :P

i'm telling your write now that the cynicism at usafa is the same at all military academies. I've talked to kids from all of them and they all feel the same exact way. I

i'm telling your write now that the cynicism at usafa is the same at all military academies. I've talked to kids from all of them and they all feel the same exact way. It's here in such abundance because it's sooooo incredibly hard and complaining is just how people cope with their frustration. If they really hated it as much as they claim they do then they would leave, and yet they don't because it's just their way of venting. I really didn't understand it until i got here. Now i see why upperclassmen can get like that. You just have to remember why you're here and not let yourself fall victim to it.

That's the key: be the one who's different and doesn't get cynical. Your life will be so much better if you do this, too.

Has the ratio of guys to girls been hard at all? Or do you barely even notice it?

Don't notice it, except at balls lol.

I have classes with a lot of girls, and I hang around with a lot of girls, so I don't notice so much.

One of my upperclassmen thinks its unhealthy/unnatural for me to be as happy as I am all the time. lol, that's how odd I can be.

Do doolies and basic cadets get enough to eat?
(I explained the table decorum that we experienced at Summer Seminar to my mom, and she became concerned about us starving...I tried to explain that you will probably get fat if you eat everything that they give you, but to no avail)

If you do become a cadet, your mom's concerns can be eliminated by her sending you LOTS of care packages. My S asks for beef jerky and slim jimms along with the other goodies. :)

Sounds good...:)

My son is on the very thin side. They weigh him every week or so, and have placed him at a "heavy" table where he does not have to eat at attention. He also picks up a fourth meal after dinner each evening that he can eat later if he wants to. That's probably better than being at the other end of the scale, but, yes, they are concerned about your weight and will work with you according to your needs.

During basic, we had TOO much food. We all gained weight lol. You get plenty, even with the decorum, they ask, "has everyone had a full and satisfying meal?" and if you haven't, let them know and they have no problem letting you finish as much as you want at the table. A lot of times at meals, if it was getting close to the end and people still needed time, you would get a minute or two at ease to eat as much as possible. During the school year Mitch's serves plenty of food usually and you can stay as long as you like or can (based on classes). The dinner buffet is unlimited and then you can buy stuff at the C-store or get packages. You won't starve here at all.

Thanks. Like I said, I got the impression at Summer Seminar that they serve enough to feed a bunch of sumo wrestlers, but my mom wasn't impressed...She's a lot more at ease about it now.

I am very thin and have a rediculus metabolism. I lost a lot of weight during Basic. Then again, I eat really slow and stink at eating at attention. However, they gave me 3-4 shakes to drink every day (an extra 1200 calories). It was a problem, but everyone was happy to work out a solution.

They don't deliver packages during Basic, so care packages are only for after basic.

What's the weather like right now? Is the freshman Chemistry class similar to the AP high school version or is it a lot harder? Has your class done any cool spirit missions recently? Have you had room inspections yet where they rip everything apart and throw your mattresses on the floor? Have you had any home football games? Do you have any fun traditions with your squadron? Do you still eat at attention? Do you still run along the marble to class? Wasn't parents' weekend a landmark of some sort for you four digs as far as privileges go? Lots of questions ;)

It's cool, but not cold. I am in the advanced Chem. class, and it is harder than AP Chem. We have not had any "Slammies" yet...my squad is cool. No home football games yet, very soon though. We have the Gallon Challenge, but that is not exclusive to our squad. Yes, we eat at attention. It is not like basic though. Most of the upperclassmen don't really care as long as it looks like attention from a distance...again a chill squad. Yes, we run the strips to class and anywhere else. Parent's weekend was the first time we got to sign out and leave. It was also the first time we could use Arnold Hall...mmm...Subway...

how tough is the math. would I be prepared enough for the course. I'm a senior in high school, I have taken Honors Algebra 1, Honors Gemometry, Algebra 2, Trig, an dnow I am in AP Statistics. Im kind of worried about calculus. I have also heard that it is nearly impossible to fail, unless you don't try at all, b/c there are always tutoring sessions, etc.

AP Calc would be a lot more useful. They have placement tests during basic that will hopefully place you in an appropriate class. You have great access to instructors if you need it.
