I know I'm the third Exeter person to post a thread like this but...
I'm on break, and will answer any questions anyone has :)

How are the dances? Are they good and how often do u have them?

How many classes do u take and/or how many do you recommend as a new 10th grader? (if i get in)

I probably have more questions but I’m just forgetting

Dances are very intense. We have them almost every other week.

You take 5 classes (math, english, science, a foreign language, and an elective) plus health which is only twice a week.

So for classes, there isn’t PE?

Oh yeah PE is required (or a sport) but they don’t really count it as one of your classes.

You only have to take health during your first year at PEA. You are required to have a sports credit - either you play a sport or you’re in a club sport. For preps, you can’t join club sports, you have to take physical education a.k.a spaz

The dances aren’t that bad, but don’t go before like 9:45.
We have a dance almost every/every other Saturday, and a lot of them are themed (We’ve had Halloween, Exeter/Andover, Fall Ball, and most dorms host a dance)

This year, as a 9th grader, I’m taking 5 academic courses (Latin, History, Math, English, and Bio), but I also have Prep Spaz (PE) four times a week, health twice a week, and chamber orchestra three times a week.

Most tenth graders usually take five academic courses (language, math, English, science, and some elective - art, history, religion etc.). There is a specific number of electives you are required to take, and most people like to use Prep (9th) and Lower (10th) year to fulfill these requirements. However, there are some who choose to do these requirements later, and will just take four courses (no elective). As a new lower, you would also take lower health, which meets two times a week, and you would have a sport, which meets four times a week.

Okay, thanks! How hard would adjusting be for new lowers? Both socially and academically. Also, I know this has been asked like 38457 times already, but are you happy at Exeter? xD And what kind of person do you think would be happy at Exeter?

Does anyone take six classes? Because I take 5 and an elective now, play in concert and jazz band, and do a lot of EC’s, and I still have a lot of extra time. I know it might not be smart doing that my first year but if it’s something I think I can do would it be possible? Also, you don’t have to answer this if you don’t want to but hannahlove or asiankid, could you describe what the dances are like? Like grinding, people hooking up, stuff like that…?

I don’t think adjusting would be too hard for you. I mean, most of your classmates are only a year ahead of you. I guess that’s going to be the only down side to it. They had one year to get to know each other well. But don’t worry, I know some new lowers who are really close friends with returning lowers already. That’s socially.
Academically, I can’t really say much about this topic. By this time, I think all the lowers would still be trying to adjust to Exeter’s academic requirements.

I am definitely happy at Exeter. I think any kind of person would be happy at Exeter. The school is so diverse that you will most likely find someone who shares the same interest as you, someone who has the some ethnic background, someone who listens to the same music, etc. There are so many opportunities that you can grab. You really can get yourself involved. You’ll discover some hidden talents and passions and you might decide to pursue those things.

There are so many ways you can be happy at Exeter. I know, I really cant’ say much because I’ve only been an Exonian for a few months. But these few months have been life changing and amazing.

I can’t speak for the new lowers themselves, but I know a few and they seem to have no problem adjusting.
Just as it was for any new student at Exeter, the school has a different environment and atmosphere, and the Harkness method may be new to some people. However, most people I know like this, and they have no trouble adjusting (this may take a few days, or a term, depending on the person).

I am very happy at Exeter - my parents think maybe a little too happy
I love the classes I’m taking, and I love the Harkness method. Outside of school too, there are so many things to do. I find myself spending hours at Dhall and Agora/Grill. On the weekends, there are so many things to do - trips to the mall, movies, dances, going out to eat, walking around downtown…

I think anyone who is willing to work hard to meet up with the demands of the school would love Exeter. While the courses can be challenging, and managing school, extracurriculars, and a social life can be crazy at times, if your driven, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Alright, thanks!!

Six academic classes? I’m sure it’s possible, but it’s a lot to handle. Currently, I’m taking five, and chamber orchestra takes up a class format - this leaves me with three free periods a week.

What extracurriculars are you thinking of doing? Just keep in mind that classes end at six, and then after that you have two hours to go to club meetings, rehearsals, etc. and some people find it hard to keep up with so many things (some meetings also overlap timewise). Even with this, I know people who manage to be tri-varsity, play in orchestras, write for the school newspaper, and still find time to do community service.

EC wise, I would be in the concert and jazz bands, play lacrosse in the spring, take piano lessons, try to find time for community service, and maybe a club or two depending on my time balancing/interests.

Right now I get home around 8 because of all my EC’s and I easily get all my work done and all my instruments practiced. I know Exeter would be much more challenging than my school now but I think I can handle it. Also, honestly, I don’t sleep. On a day I get all my work done at 8, I can’t fall asleep before midnight. If I have two tests and a paper due the next day, I won’t cram and go to bed at midnight, I’ll stay up until 2 and make sure I know the material inside out and still not be tired the next day. I don’t know why, but I just don’t need sleep (and if I went to Exeter i would definitely have a ton of Red Bull on demand, with that stuff I could actually stay up as late as I want and still not be tired ).

That was a pretty long post…

Oh, I have two more questions. When is the gym/weight room open? If I have my own lifting program should that be done in the morning, find free periods every week to do it, do it after rehearsals around 8, or do it during a PE period?

Second, what do you do if rehearsals/club meetings overlap?

Your extracurriculars sound manageable - most orchestras and bands only practice twice a week (usually from 6:45-8:15), your sports practice is during the day (although games can take up your Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, especially if they’re away), and lessons only take up one period a week (you should find time to practice, though )

I don’t know the exact hours of the gym, but I have a friend who goes to the gym before classes starts and works out. You could honestly go whenever you have free time - during the day, before school, or even possibly after dinner.

With overlapping club meetings and rehearsals, I guess you just have to prioritize. If there is a meeting you have to attend, go to it. Usually the meetings and rehearsals are set up in a way so they don’t coincide time-wise (ex: most rehearsals are Mondays and Thursdays, while things like Student Council and The Exonian meet on Tuesdays)

Your sleep will probably depend on multiple things - how much work you get assigned, how well you use your free time, and what your dorm’s policy is on lights out. I live in a dorm where preps and lowers have a strict 11 PM lights out policy (the internet goes out at 11 anyways…). However, most dorms don’t really check on this, and will allow you to stay up as late as you want to as long as your quiet. Honestly, you need your sleep to fully function in class, so I would recommend trying to use what free time you have in your day to finish work.

ok thanks, and sorry one last little thing, say concert band and jazz band rehearse at the same times 1 out of the 2 days of the week, would u just like switch off which one you go to?

What instrument do you play? Usually, if you’re in a high level, you will end up in either the Symphony or Chamber Orchestra. People with less experience may be in the Symphonia Orchestra, or Concert Band. There is also Stage Band, but I don’t know much about it. The music department will place you in the group that they think fits your skill level.
Usually, people don’t join two groups that rehearse at the same time, because those groups are ones essentially the same just at different skill levels, but I think if you are doing two totally different groups, you might be able to leave one rehearsal a little early to get to another rehearsal (I think there are two trumpet players in our Symphony Orchestra that leave early sometimes to get to another rehearsal)
You should ask the music department if you have more questions - or anyone else on CC from Exeter? - I don’t really know that much about wind/brass/woodwind instruments and the different ensembles that are available to those players, sorry! (I’m a violin player )

I play the trombone and I’m first chair in my band and made All-State band so I would think I’d be placed in whatever the highest level band/orchestra was. I just thought all the bands played different types of music and they were the same skill level…
