I just finished up my first year at GW and I would love to answer any questions you may have! Ask me about anything from class registration to dating (I'm a girl but I can answer pretty much anything)!

Are Potomac kids generally secluded from the social life at Foggy Bottom? Do you know if there’s a party scene at Potomac too or does everyone just go to Thurston to party?

How are the professors and the advising?

Hey, I’m trying to decide between whether I should put down crawford or Potomac as my first choice. I know I want to live on Foggy Bottom no matter what and I don’t think I want thurston. I was just wondering if any one can tell me what the differences are between Crawford, Madison, Lafayette and Potomac. I think I would like Crawford better than Potomac + I wasn’t ED, so I may not be able to get potomac anyway. also Im going to be Ba/md and honors so I was wondering whether that has any impact on whether I get my top preferences. It would be great if you could tell me more about the houses on Foggy bottom. Thanks

what are the best ways to build up a community yet not over do things at GW? Admittedly, I tend to try to do everything that looks “good” to do and end up over working myself, because of this I opted out of the first year community things like the honors program and the politics and values program. I still want to be involved just not over do anything- what are the most worth while things to get involved with at GW?

Hey guys,

I’m not gwufreshman, but I’ll take a crack at your questions…

Saman, Potomac kids are definitely not excluded from the social life. Room parties are more common, and if you’re up for it, a lot of people go across the street to Thurston to party. Clubbing is popular, too, and I hear that even Vern kids party. Word of caution: if your Potomac room faces Thurston, it may be hard to sleep.

This is pretty idiosyncratic, sealee. I loved my advisor (ESIA), although a friend of mine (CCAS) was less than satisfied. It’s dependent on the school and on the individual. For a more general opinion, pick your school and check out the ‘advising’ bar graph:

Same goes for professors. Be smart in your selections, talk to upperclassmen, and use Rate My Professor.

Himura, I don’t believe BA/MD has its own wing of a dorm or even its own dorm like the WLP girls do, but I know for a fact that the Honors kids tend to live together. Last year, they all lived in Thurston, but there were a few stragglers in other dorms. I think Honors is moving its dorms to the Vern (the program is, anyway), but don’t quote me on that.

Potomac and Lafayette are hard to get into if you’re not ED. Both are brand new (Lafayette was renovated just last summer) and very comfy. Crawford has an unbeatable location (near the Metro, Gelman/Gelbucks, – Gelman Starbucks – Phillips/Rome Halls and the SMPA for classes, Lisner, the Marvin Cenetr for J St/events, etc), but it leaves something to be desired. It’s an old building and very dirty. Madison is more or less the same, but I hear it has a kitchen on every floor, which is a plus. More athletes live there, and it’s got more of a party rep than Crawford.

Join one activity, and get involved in it to the max. If you’re into Greek Life, for example, become the most active brother/sister and take on a leadership role when available. This can be applicable to any activity, though.

As for the most worthwhile… this really depends on your interests. Some kids love the student government (SA), while the humans vs zombies club won’t give those guys the time of day (and vice versa). College Republicans and College Democrats are both popular in sheer number, but a much smaller group actually takes an incredibly active interest. The Hatchet is fun if you’re into that sort of thing – they need everyone from photographers to writers to video people. Just choose something you like.

…but, apparently, not enough to come back and do it.

If you have any questions, I’ll be happy to answer them.

Is there a difference between Upper and Lower Thurston?

In terms of room quality, no. I do believe that the Honors kids and the engineers lived in Upper Thurston, as did the Politics and Values participants, but that’s about it.

And we all know that those 3 groups of people party the hardest, so… yeah!

Wmurphy, I gotta say, those engineers – excuse me, EMeRGineers – took me by surprise.

Cold beer, good weed, and differential equations. That’s the life.

gdubcolonial: My tour guide was an engineering major and she said that “EMeRGineers study the hardest, but party even harder” haha, yes!

Nah, Saman, discrete math is where it’s at.

Ninth floor Thurston on a Friday night (or any night, for that is matter) is an experience, that’s for sure.

Hi! I’m a prospective GW freshman and I got accepted into CCAS. I am thinking of going on the premed track, but I’m not exactly sure what I want to major in, since we can really major in anything as a premed student and there are just so many subjects I enjoy! Here are the majors I’m seriously considering: math, statistics, psychology, chemistry, biology, biophysics, physics, journalism, public health. I was wondering if anyone is taking these majors/has advice about these majors at GW? I am also considering double majoring/minoring, but I’m really not sure what combination of the above I should do! Thanks!

Also…any advice about rooming in Merriweather, Clark, Cole, Hensley? (my top choices)

It’s funny how gwufreshman has yet to respond.

First off, pick whichever major you can a) get the highest gpa in and/or b) interests you the most. For most people those two things coincide, because if you are interested in it, you are more likely to do well. Don’t forget you have to take all the premed requirements to get into medical school, which if you are majoring in Journalism might limit a double major (possible).

Second off, those are all mount vernon dorms. You are pretty much gaurenteed all four of them because once again, it’s mount vernon.

My d’s friend is an incoming freshman. the Honors dorms are at the Vern this year.
