I’m an admitted engineering student. I’m a minority and very concerned about the atmosphere on campus. Ive visited several times and didn’t see much diversity. I have a full ride and I’m very serious about my academics and committed to community service … I’m hoping that SMU will be enjoyable for me!

I was wondering about scholarships, are there certain cut offs for each of the scholarship. I am also wondering, is SMU known for being pretentious. That’s what I hear and I was just wondering.

Hi @wayneS1996,

You will be automatically considered for SMU’s merit scholarships when you apply to SMU. Which is awesome, no extra essays! Plus, if you get accepted, you would also receive any scholarship offer with your acceptance letter. There is only one merit scholarship that you have to apply for separately, The Hunt Leadership Scholarship, and I believe the deadline for that in January.

I was worried about SMU being pretentious, but I ultimately ended up choosing the school and being really happy here. If you haven’t visited campus yet, I would highly encourage you to do so, so you can see what the student body is like for yourself. You will find some spoiled, stuck up people here, but most people are really friendly and down-to-earth. It all depends on who you surround yourself with!

Hi! Is it difficult to get accepted as a transfer student? When I apply, I’ll have about a 3.3 GPA. I am a Texas resident if that makes any difference. Also, are they generous with their financial aid packages? I live close to the campus, so I’ll be staying with my parents, which will save me a few thousand!

Hi @Xtinadoll
No, it’s not too difficult to get accepted as a transfer student. Here is the page that outlines scholarship opportunities: <a href=“Transfer Scholarships”>http://www.smu.edu/Admission/Apply/Transfer/TransferScholarships. Unfortunately, all of the transfer scholarships that SMU awards require at least a 3.5 GPA. Other financial aid we may award requires you to fill out the CSS profile and FASFA. About 80% of our student body recieves financial aid of some sort (need or merit), so I would say SMU is very generous! That’s great that you will be able to save some more money by commuting from home.
