Questions for a UW student pt. 2

Hi!, I received an admit from UW, for the fall 2010 session. Mech engg graduate program. Anyone here can tell me about the dept and opportunities?

Karthik, what do you mean by opportunities? what are your expectations?
[Areas of Research](http://www.me.washington.edu/research/areas/) gives a good overview of what’s happening at UW’s ME dept. Wish you all the best.

Hi Mahaffie!, I received an admit from UW, for the fall 2010 session. Mech engg graduate program. Can you tell me about the dept and opportunities?

How is the department rated? That’s what i mean. Does it have strong industrial ties?

And what would be the procedure to transfer from mechanical to Aeronautics in the second semester? The procedure, if you can elaborate maxxwell.

Karthik, my knowledge in this regard is limited. I am assuming that mech. eng dept at UW has strong ties with Boeing given the proximity. Seattle area has several companies engaged in medical device development. I think there is a strong interdisciplinary research between mechanical and bioengineering depts. This is the area where I sense a lot of excitement.

when signing up for a class, is it possible to see who teaches it?

I think so. Class schedules generally include names of main instructors. I am not sure about tutorials.

awesome, thanks! now to look into classes…

I am sort of confused between the Dining Account and the Husky Card account. I got a letter today regarding Housing and it mentioned this:

“Dining Account: Section XII - You are required to select and pay for a Dining Level for each quarter you are in residence. Any money left on your Dining Account at the time that you move out or at the end of the agreement period, whichever occurs first, will be forefeited. It will not be refunded, and it may not be transferred to your Husky Card Account. You may change your Dining Level selection via the Application Instructions and Status page. A table showing the change request deadline for each quarter can be found below.”

So yeah I just typed that but main point I want to know is if the Dining Account and the Husky Card account are two separate things? I thought that my Husky card would be linked to my Dining Account and I’d simply swipe it to get food. (I’m confused because it says I am not able to transfer the money to my Husky card account once my residence has ended.) Thanks guys.

They are two separate things but both on your husky card. Whenever you buy food on campus, it takes away from your dining account. you can also add money to your husky card account to buy other stuff or more food if you run out towards the end of the quarter (but you may be so sick of dorm food by then that you wouldn’t bother anyways).

hi, i’m new to this whole registration-for-classes thing as the school i’ve attended does not use this sort of system. yes, i was admitted to the university of washington (don’t worry haha), done the registering for an a&o etc.
i may sound stupid, but do we register for classes at the a&o session? or must we first register for classes online?

thank you for the thread ^^

Hah, well once you come into the UW, you’ll see that HFS (housing and food services) is quite the evil corporation. The thing is, as mentioned above, once you pick a food plan, you can’t go back that quarter, if you don’t eat up all of your funds for a quarter you have to spend all of your money on the last day so it doesn’t all go to waste. My advice: pick the LOWEST/CHEAPEST dining plan, then put funds on your husky card according to needs. Husky card funds DO roll over, so HFS can’t pull a fast one on you. PLUS, if you have more funds on your husky card, you can eat at quite a few delicious restaurants on the ave. including, UT, Chipotle, BBQ Chicken, Yunnie Bubble Tea, Yummy Bites, Hurricane Spud, etc;. Also, see if you can get a job with HFS working in one of the cafeterias or the UW bookstore, they’re both very flexible with your schedules and its always useful to have some spending money.

Also, with the Classes/professors questions, the professors teaching the classes you registered for appear either instantly or a few weeks before the quarter starts. A few good resources you can use to check the popularity/competency of the professors are the course evaluation catalog and, of course, ratemyprofessor.com

course eval. catalog: just click the letter of the class you’re taking and you can find past evaluations given.

I don’t know too much about the engineering programs, I’m sorry

And you register for classes at your A&O (unless things have changed since I first came). I wish you luck! Ps, I recommend taking Eng. Comp. your first quarter because it’s pesky, annoying and you probably want to get your most condescending class out of the way as soon as possible. On the topics of figs, I do recommend them if you’re new to the area and don’t know many people. Chances are, out of the 25 or so people you’ll meet, you’ll make one or two good friends. It’s one of the most basic steps in creating a social network at a new humongous school like the UW. However, if you know plenty of people coming in, you may not necessarily want to be in a FIG, as most of them are 12 credits and taking 12 credits–aka beginning the year behind (in terms of credits)–isn’t such a great idea. Plus, if you don’t take a FIG, you’ll be able to customize your classes more easily and potentially knock out some pre-reqs for your major early (which I recommend). If you intersperse pre-reqs and major classes starting your freshman year, you’ll be able to mitigate the load of major classes that would inevitably occur during your junior and senior year. Plus, you’ll have more flexibility in taking some of the fun elective classes offered here. In other words, if you take major/major pre-req classes starting freshman year, you’ll be able to take electives almost every quarter and you’ll be able to relax a bit more than the average procrastinating, cramming, shovethemajorintotwoyears college student. DON’T DICK AROUND FRESHMAN YEAR, especially if you’re in the sciences. I would highly recommend visiting both a general academic advisor and your major advisor as soon as you’re set and positive on what you want to study.

Ask more questions! also, if you need someone to talk to, or show you around campus when you get here, you can add me on facebook, as I’ve mentioned before. My username is my last name (mahaffie) and you should be able to find me. I’m even open for coffee. All because I don’t want anyone to share/experience my frantic, lost, scared as hell, running around with my head on fire freshman year. Cheerio!

thank you ubermuch  by the way, i didn’t know you were a guy. (facebook rofl)
i’ll come back if i have anymore questions :D

do u happen to know when they will release the decision of in-state transfer?

sorry im really new to all this but you said “If you intersperse pre-reqs and major classes starting your freshman year” how can u take major classes when u dont have the pre reqs, how can someone go straight into a major in freshman year?

MATHEMATICS

How come in this page almost all the classes are full… it says it just opened today… I think it is not for freshmans.

Also do you know any good math/business teachers? after all classes almost completely depend on how good a teacher is.

Lastly how exactly do credits work?

Sorry for putting up so much question, thank you!!!

just a clarification of mahaffie’s post. dining account funds DO roll over to the next quarter in fall and winter but not after spring.

@ Onibaku, the schedule you posted is for spring 2010

and the box that says it was just opened today is actually saying that the information on the page is updated as of today, not that is was just posted today

click back on “time schedule” in the top left, and select autumn or summer 2010 depending on when you are going to start…

summer (looks like people already starting signing up for summer)

Thanks a lot dinie, so incoming freshmen could already start choosing classes on MATHEMATICS ?

isnt summer june to sept, that is not for fresh men tho… so for freshmen classes it starts at fall
