Questions for current Cornellians...

-If you could change one thing about the college, what would it be?

-How many hours of homework do you have per night?

-How are the parties?

Thanks

Homework varies depending on professor. However, if you can time manage and not procrastinate unlike the majority of students here, you won’t have a lot of homework. I barely have any homework for like 3 weeks from now because I’ve been doing them since the past week and took my fall break to do homework/essay’s due a long time from now. So, I’m basically doing homework that’s assigned the day it’s given, e.g. reading. Depends on how you work. If you like to do stuff right away and not delay anything you should be fine. Prelims are always around the corner which sucks. Time flys fast here…really fast.

Parties are awesome. Go with friends.

Cornell charges you for everything, but there are a lot of unique experiences you can have at Cornell

Depends on your courses and major, but most students study about 3-4 hours a night 4-5 days a week

Frat Parties are good, but do not compare to colleges known for partying. Bars are very good but tough to get in if your not 21

oh yea, cornell nickels and dimes ya for EVERYTHING

Either the weather or how upset people here get about grades. But seriously, neither is that big a deal, I still love it here.

Depends on the day. But usually not so bad. Definitely not as bad as everyone cracks it up to be, I’d say that if I procrastinated less I could get everything done pretty fast. Def. less than high school.

Awesome.

I heard that the work load for the engineers is MUCH tougher than that of other schools (like most other universities, but especially Cornell). Can anyone validate this?

Gotta ask an engineering transfer.

The rest of us have only been to Cornell. How would we know what the work load is like at other schools?

im a freshman engineer taking mostly sophomore level classes and i’ve partied every weekend since i’ve been here, minus the last one because i was sick. so the workload will not kill you. at least, not the first year.

If I could change one thing: the dorming system. I feel like each part of the campus has its own stigma or stereotype. North is freshman. West are sophomores-juniors who didn’t go greek. Collegetown students either had bad lottery numbers, went because it’s cheaper, or wanted to try something different. Frats/sororities are usually in their respective houses. I wish I could meet different types of people on a regular basis instead of at parties and clubs but when it’s a lazy sunday and it’s snowy out, I stay in, so I’m only live with my type. I love the diversity here and think a more cohesive dorming system would help people take advantage of it.

Depends on your major. Engineers have some every night. I’m an ILRie and don’t have “homework” per se but I do have a lot of reading so I usually put in like a solid 1-2 hours of straight reading every day keeps me well on top of things.

The bigger/really popular (like Halloween) parties are amazing. Don’t let anyone else tell you different. Better than NY clubs I think because you know everyone is your age and a lot of them are Cornell-only, you don’t pay for anything, and everyone’s just looking for a good time.

I love this place…

-If you could change one thing about the college, what would it be?
I do like that comment above about housing. it could be a lot less fragmented. I’m not starting a conversation about program housing either…I don’t see the point of isolating freshmen on North at all. well I see the reasoning but I didn’t like it.
I’d also give it a train station to NYC with cheap tickets. or move it closer to a big city. something like that. I’m not crazy about urban stuff and Ithaca is cool but I like to visit more than I can currently.
-How many hours of homework do you have per night?
I always have to do something. I get a lot done on weekends because I have weekly homework, but I’d say never more than 4-5 hours a night on schoolwork.
-How are the parties?
I don’t go, but I hear good things, so don’t take that to mean anything negative. I just don’t care for that stuff. :)

the party scene here is legit. I have been to my fair share of shindigs and they have been thrown well for the most part. All parties serve keystone, and some serve some other cheap alcohol like andre, or mixed barton’s drinks. The best thing about the parties here is that they are free, FREE. My friends at state schools spend most of their time at the 19+ year old bars and they can blow 50 bucks in an evening of drinking, I drink for FREE. its the best. Also, you tend to get to know most of the people who go out, because prob only 1/3 to 1/5 of the class goes out on a regular basis and drinks on the weekends, so you see a lot of familiar faces which is nice. I also beat my TA at BP at a frat recently and saw her smoke a J, lol.

-If you could change one thing about the college, what would it be?
I would flatten all the bloody hills.

-How many hours of homework do you have per night?
Depends, none some night, allnighters other nights (I procrastinate haha)

-How are the parties?
Lots of fun, yes go with friends.

I would make the winters less cold.

It varies by night. On weekends I usually do 7 hours a night. Weekdays, maybe 2 or 3. Fridays are for relaxing. Right before project deadlines my friends and I usually don’t sleep until it’s done. But then, I’m a junior in engineering. I didn’t do nearly as much work as a freshman.

Parties are lame. I only drink after exams.

1) The stupid distribution/language reqs in CAS. I wish it was like Brown. I feel like it’s kind of difficult to take whatever random classes I want because some of them don’t fit in the distro categories. I mean, a history class is a history class. I feel like getting a science major to willingly take one should be sufficient enough.

2) It depends. I tend to work in spurts. I’ll put it off for a while until I’ve got some free time, and then get it all done. There’s work, but there’s yet to be a Friday or Saturday night where I felt like I had to stay in because of the work.

3) Hit or miss, just like at most places, but overall pretty good I’d say. However, my girlfriend goes to a big state school down south, and their frat parties don’t involve dancing or anything. She said ours are better… Surprising.
