Questions for current Rice Students

Can you address the following:

among the student body have you found the general atmosphere cut-throat or collaborative?

is the university ( in your experience with professors, students, etc. ) overall conservative, moderate, or liberal?

how would you rate the personalities of your professors (although I understand that this question varies substantially, but generally speaking) superb teachers- willing to help, arrogant-and unapproachable?

Are there any non co-ed dorms available for entering freshman?

Thanks Much : )

VERY COLLABORATIVE. Trust me on that. It's one of the major reasons I chose Rice, and I have not been disappointed there.

Definitely there are many people who are conservative and many liberals. search the archives for more info. I would say among the students there is a slight majority (plurality?) liberal. Among the faculty, probably a liberal bent, but not overwhelmingly so at all. Rice is more liberal than Texas, and more conservative than most universities of it's caliber.

Varies a lot. In generally, my profs have been REALLY personable, helpful, accessible, etc. I have been to several professors office hours, and got an e-mail from a professor today. I've eaten dinner at two of my professor's homes. They all - even the ones I didn't click with - really know their subjects. And, it's important to realize that there are people who didn't like my favorite profs, and their are people who loved the ones I didn't.

Nope - although all the bathrooms are single sex, and some colleges have in-suite bathrooms (meaning you wont have to walk down the hall in your towel/bathrobe).

I think recently two colleges still had a single-sex floor. But I think they are co-ed now. Though I am not entirely sure. Either way, you are randomly placed in a college, so it wouldn't be up to you anyway.

About the professors, I found that even in the fairly large intro science classes (physics, math, chemistry) that due to different sections and discussions sections, you can still get a personal experience with them.

My physics professor last semester was very approachable and had the door to his office open throughout all of the working day. Before tests, he would be there until midnight. The professors I've had have been amazing thus far.

was that Todd (the physics prof)? He was GREAT

I was talking about Suess

thanks much guys : )
