I have asked this of a couple of other threads and would be curious as to the answers regarding Cornell:

Is the marching band no cut?

Is the campus diverse and inclusive...and do black students seem to be welcoming and accepting to one another?

Is the feel of the school in general welcoming or elitist?

Thanks!

2 Black students mix well into the great blend that is the Cornell student body! My black friends fit right in and there are many Black student organizations! From the Black Engineers Society to the Black Premed club…theres a whole bunch of things you can get involved with. I also love that Cornell has a large African population too! I am friends with people from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Togo…the list goes on. Also, many students love the Africana classes that focus on black studies. The qualities of the classes are superb…from Black Carribean Historty to a class on Rastifarian Culture :)

Elitist is never a word I have heard people used to describe Cornell. From the professors to the students, people are very open and friendly. In fact, some of my best friends simply interjected into conversation at the dinning hall! I think people start to realize in culture the more varied your friendships, the better off you are.

Not a student but a parent of two alumni and frequent visitor. I will only address the part of your question that I am familiar with. The Cornell vibe is not elitist at all, in fact I would say for a University of this level that is probably one of my many favorite characteristics. It is a school with very wealthy students, and low income students and they come from all over the country, and all over the world. During my visits I have seen students of all races, and I did not get the feeling that being a particular race would put anyone at a social disadvantage. I hope this helped…Wishing you all the best during the application process.
