Questions for current WashU students

I hope it’s okay so ask some questions on this thread even though it’s not my own but I’m going to visit WUSTL next week for the DPT program.

I really just wanted to know about quality of life there for grad students and the area in general.

I know that WUSTL is ranked #2 for the DPT program but the city of ST. Louis is ranked #1 for crime for cities between 1,000-499,000 people. How do you students feel about this?

I’m a California guy (socal) so I don’t know how I’ll adapt to the weather, surroundings, and overall social life.

Do students pretty much just stay on campus? Olin residence for grad students is where I’ll probably end up for the first semester until I get a grasp of places to live. Is that a safe area? I’m not sheltered and I have lots of experience outside of California but still, what am I getting myself into if I decide to go here?

Thanks

the #1 crime rank is only in the very small area that I doubt you will ever venture… the overwhelming majority of St Louis is outside of that area that isnt counted in the statistics and is very upscale (where WashU is located).

To expand on what newprov said, Wash U is in a very nice part of St. Louis. It actually isn’t even in the city limits, but it does border it. But on one side is a huge park where students go all the time (site of the 1904 World’s Fair, btw), on another is big, old money homes, on another is Clayton, a suburb that is very nice, a mix of business that almost rivals downtown St. Louis (except nicer) and typical suburban restaurants and shopping, and finally the Delmar Loop, a rehabbed area that has a lot of the night life for Wash U students. I cannot say strongly enough that newprov is right, that crime is highly localized and far away from Wash U, and besides I don’t think St. Louis is #1 any more. But it doesn’t matter, Wash U is in a lovely area and the campus is classic.

Can’t do much about the weather, sorry. Social life isn’t SoCal, but there is plenty to do.

Thanks for the input, the DPT program is on the Medical School Campus on the East side of the park?

Is that area any different? I know that I should mainly be concerned with academics but if I’m going to live there for 3years or so I’d like to enjoy it at least. =)

Any PT students out there that were from Cali care to give some insight?

Yes, the DPT program would be located on the med school campus. It’s somewhat different, mostly because it’s not really closed off like main campus. It borders a popular area of town, the central west end, where there are lot of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and a movie theater. My roommate was in the DPT program and lived in the CWE, walked to class every day, and seemed to really like the area… the CWE in general is a pretty popular place for med students, grad students, etc to live.
