Ok so I'm just wondering what your opinions are on the differences between the first semester of your freshman year VS the second semester of your freshman year. Yes I realize everything depends on the university and the kind of person you are but please share your experiences and give your feedback and opinions on stuff such as... classes in general, difficulty, mood around campus, people, parties, happiness, athletes, etc... whatever!!

Personally I've adjusted really well and enjoyed my first sem of college. My GPA is about a 3.5... looking to do much better... never partied in HS but been very open to everything and I'm having a good time even though I'm not too into the frat parties dorm/house parties are really cool... not too much luck with girls been rejected by one in fact... great roommate... many opportunities in campus... many good friends several great friends, etc

Freshmen feel free to share your experiences as well!

I don’t think there will be much of a difference. You’ll be more used to college I guess, and things won’t seem as exciting (or daunting) as before. Classes get tougher in general. But towards the end of the semester, the weather gets much nicer, so the atmosphere gets better.

Also, it’s great that you got a good roommate. I had my best roommate during freshman year, and that made a big difference.

First semester of the freshman year, is normally spent adjusting to college life, college marking and having to juggle many assignments and labs for the first time without the one on one time of teachers. Many freshman find the second semester is a bit easier, since they have already adjusted to cafeteria food and residence there may be less panic and anxiety about that. Once you hit second year it will be much easier, learning to be responsible for your self 24/7 is a big adjustment to make as many students are used to having a parent around to make sure their homework is done, etc. So I would say that yes it will be an easier semester as you have done most of the adjusting work already.

My school’s big on greek life and people will start pledging in the spring (not allowed in fall) how do you think this will change students’ work ethics, friendships, moods, class attendance, etc…?

I can tell you that I know the second semester will be harder for me…I’m taking four 200 level classes and only one 100 (although one 200 is A&P which I started this semester but withdrew from)…so there will be a lot more work involved!

Generally 2nd semester freshmen are less naive and make fewer bad decisions than 1st semester ones and act less immature to upperclassmen in general, because they know what to expect in terms of grades and social life. Friends/dynamics are still changing, but not quite as much as 1st semester. In terms of grades 1st semester my gpa was 3.7, but 2nd semester my classes were a lot more difficult and I took on a job so my gpa dropped a little because of that (it varies from person to person, but overall if you survive freshman year gpa-wise your grades will likely improve from semester to semester). I doubt greek life will have a huge effect on you, especially if you choose not to involve yourself in the greek community but there will probably be more frat parties in the spring when the pledges come…generally, greeks and non-greeks get along fine if that is something that concerns you. If you have a few friends who end up pledging just know that they’ll probably be super-busy with their fraternity/sorority because overall greek life is a pretty big time commitment with lots of meetings, ceremonies, presentations, events, parties that require attendance.

I did the same thing in the second semester of my freshman year. The only time I really felt stressed was when all of my important assignments (i.e. tests and papers) all lined up during the same week for mid-terms. Other than that, it actually wasn’t bad. I did considerably better my second semester than my first (3.89 gpa compared to a 3.68 gpa respectively.)

I don’t have a choice. If I did, believe me, I wouldn’t be doing it. But alas, I’m a nursing major, and we have to get our CORE out of the way faster since during the 2nd and 3rd year we only take 1 class a semester at our college and the rest is nursing at at the College of Nursing/hospital for clinicals.

I’ll probably have nearly the same difficulty in terms of my classes but might have less time to do things (pledging for business frat) so I guess not too much will change for me =) Hope I do make more friends and get to know more people
