Questions for people who go to BU?

how big are the classes?
like 500+???
or around 70-1000

What do you do (Social-wise)?

Does BU have school pride? Do you guys go to the Basketball Games?

Which Majors are hardest to get into in BU?

Hockey IS King at BU. Basketball and other sports don’t get to much recognition. The largest class that i took had roughly 60 -70 students. The hardest i would suspect biomedical engineering.

the larger classes i had were ~300 students, and they were all pre-med/requirement classes for certain majors/intro level classes. my other classes were 20-50. hardest major to get into is anything in eng, then every other school at around the same level, then cgs is the easiest.

superstar is right about hockey. after 4 yrs of undergrad (and ill be at grad school at BU for another 4 years) i have not missed a home game. SO much school pride, especially since WE WON EVERYTHING YOU COULD POSSIBLY WIN THIS YEAR IN HOCKEY!!! (beanpot, ncaa championship, hockey east championship, #1 in the regular season…am i forgetting anything?). after we won the ncaa championship mayor menino declared it terrier day and there was a parade on campus where the players rode on duck boats.

social wise, as a freshman/sophomore i went to frats and friends’ apartments in allston for partying and would go all over boston with friends for dinner, shopping, day out, etc.

jr/sr year i relaxed a lot more and stayed near campus to go to the local bars (which i must say are pretty sick, especially down yawkey way during sox games if u can get in).

THANKS!

ahhh! why Pre-Med??? lol

Pre-Med courses should be smaller not larger!

oh well :(

and i knew about Boston U being a very good hockey team and etc.

For Basketball, theres always the Celtics =]

A lot of the classes I took that were non-intro level were capped at 50 for class size. No more than that were allowed to register. Then I took Core which had some pretty big lectures. I think maybe 200 students? I don’t know. But they also required Discussion sections which were about 20 students per class.

I just wanted to chip in that small classes do exist, they’re just a bit hard to come by. The smallest class I’ve taken at BU so far had only 7 students in it!

How much does community service on a high school transcript matter to BU admission officers?
Community service obviously helps, but will a lack of it be very detrimental?

statistically, the average class size at BU is 28 students. 78% of classes have 1-29 students and only 4% of classes have more than 100 students.

that said, class size will heavily depend on what your major is. nearly all my classes as a film major had fewer than 20 students (one had 6!), but most my classes as a psych minor were fairly large (still, one had 8).

keep in mind that when u have a huge lecture, it’ll also be broken down into small (20ish students) discussion sections each week. and just because a class is huge doesn’t mean the professor is not accessible. profs have required office hours during which u can visit and talk one-on-one with them.

I’m in CFA, so most of my classes are < 20 people and some are < 10. I guess it depends on your college and major.
