Hi, I'm going to be a senior this 06-07 school year and I'm a prospective student very interested in going pre-med at Duke. I'm going to be visiting the campus in the following week but I just want to ask some students questions now since I don't think I'll see many there since its summer.

I just want to know what are a lot of the pre-med students majoring in for undergrad. How are you enjoying your major so far? Can you tell me what I should expect and how I could possibly prepare for freshman year?

I'm kind of confused on what I should be doing. I'm interested in BME but then again I just want to get into med school to become internist and specialize later in cardiology(yes I know its A LOT of school) so shouldn't I just major in biology?
If you are doing BME can you tell me how the courses are and what I should expect?

I really want to go to Duke, I plan on applying ED because my board scores aren't the greatest but my GPA and EC's are excellent.

Thank you all for you time. =)

You can find premed students majoring in literally everything. Many are BME or Biology, as the Biology major is pretty awesome from what I hear, but alot major in things like Biological Anthropology, and even some humanities. I know someone going to a pretty prestigious medical school with a Duke degree in Economics. It's really completely up to you.

I'm not pre-med anymore (my hospital experience was not all I expected), but I plan on HOPEFULLY working in the pharmacology/toxicology area one day, so that's kind of related I guess. I'm obviously a Chemistry major, and fro, what I know about it I love it. There are 3 concentrations for chemistry, as well as a a few for Biology as well, and there are definitely tons of opportunities for research experience in many fields. I'm definitely impressed. Major in what you want to major in....because medical school isn't restricted to certain majors, and you'll certainly do better in something you love.

I'm gonna leave the rest of the discussion about bio major/BME to resident bio majors and engineers here...lol.

Basically, expect to work hard, because everyone and their brother here is pre-med. That sounds daunting, but it's such a welcoming environment. No ones going to tear up your notes when you aren't looking or anything...everyone wants everyone to succeed, which is part of why Duke pre-med is so amazing.

=(. No one else wants to comment?
