Hi all,
I am thinking about applying to transfer from Barnard to Smith for the fall. I was wondering if anyone has experience with transferring in and could answer some questions about the adjustment process: what the housing situation was like (if transfers were housed together), how easy it was to transfer credits, if you "fit in" as a transfer in general. Thanks!

Transfers aren’t housed together, you’re mixed into the housing system along with everybody else. How easy it is to transfer credits really varies a lot (I’m not a transfer, but many of my friends were), though Barnard and Smith are very academically similar schools so I would expect that most of your credits will transfer. The tricky thing will be if you want to study abroad and whether or not you’ll be able to do that and complete your major without too many bumps. it will depend on how many transfer credits you have going in, how many are added via study abroad (study abroad credits count as transfer credits, and you are only allowed a certain number of transfer credits overall. So if you have a bunch to start with, your study abroad courses may not all count for credit, and then you’ll have to take extra Smith classes when you come back. Happened to a friend of mine).

As far as fitting in, I can say that my friends who transferred were all awesome people and probably appreciated Smith more because they didn’t have as much time to spend there. I don’t know if that’s the general experience, but my friends certainly felt like full fledged Smithies when they graduated.
