Questions for upper classmen

I was reading MD applicant profiles and I often came across the words "Dean's list".

What is the Dean's list at Tufts? How do you get on there? How do you know if you're on there?

Dean's List is by semester (non-cumulative). So you can be on the List one semester and off the next. The cut-off is a 3.4 GPA for Liberal Arts. It may be lower for Engineering, though I am not sure (can anyone confirm?). You also have to be taking at least 4 courses. For example, I had a 4.0 GPA one of the semesters I was abroad but I was not on the Dean's List because I was only taking 3 classes, due to my completing a full-time internship.

You can check your Dean's List status for each semester on SIS, on your Unofficial Transcript. If you were on the Dean's List, it goes under each block of grades for each semester.

Dean's List is only really impressive, in my opinion, if you're on it 90%+ of the semesters. Unfortunately, the weight of being on the Dean's List is, I think, devalued by the fact that people who were on the Dean's List only semester, can still put it on their resume. That's why Latin honors (cum laude - cut-off 3.4, magna cum laude - cut-off 3.6 plus faculty nomination, and summa cum laude - cut-off 3.75 plus nomination) are a better indicator of fine academic achievement at Tufts. Latin honors are conferred after having completed your 8 semesters at Tufts (i.e,, when you graduate) and are based on your cumulative undergraduate GPA. I read somewhere that the GPA cut-offs for Latin honors are to be raised for the classes of 2009 and on -- whereby summa is 3.8 and so on.

Just FYI, I believe the average GPA of the graduating class of 2006 was around a 3.0 (B). Could anyone confirm this?

lol, i only JUST found out about it because I got on it this semester. sad - last semester I was taking 3.5 credits and didn't make it, this time around i had 5.5 and a permanent headache and still did better :)

I belive the cutoff for engineering is 3.2

"I read somewhere that the GPA cut-offs for Latin honors are to be raised for the classes of 2009 and on -- whereby summa is 3.8 and so on."

I read that too, although I think it might have been 3.75. I know that cum laude will be 3.5.

And btw latin honors are not based solely on GPA. You have to have 8 A/A- grades in your major for summa, 6 for magna and 4 for cum laude. You also have to have a minimum of one A/A- grade in each of the requirement areas as well.

But of course if you have a 3.8 I doubt this would all matter that much. Dean's list is suprising easily to get to though, I was on it twice actually and those were the semesters where I felt like I expounded the least amount of effort. 3.4 at Tufts is definately doable.

Summa is 3.75 now. So 3.8 is what I think they're raising it to.

3.8? I don't know if I could get a 3.8 at a community college. Man.
