Questions for Wake parents and students

My daughter has been looking at the list of clubs and has some ideas what interests her. I was wondering if anyone knows which clubs are very fun, vibrant and interesting. I see so many volunteer clubs, and I was wondering which ones do lots of good work and attract a lot of students. Also, does anyone know about campus media or theater? Any insights? Thanks.

Wanted to add:which clubs are the most popular with big social element aside from Greek orgs?

S is in the business fraternity AKPsi. It is a coed organization open to all majors (and many non business majors participate). They meet weekly (about 100 kids) and focus on resume writing, interview practice, leadership, etc. He joined as a second semester freshmen.

It’s also quite social. They have mountain weekend and beach weekend. They also have parties and formals each semester. It’s fun but not anywhere to the extreme of the Frats / Sororities (parties). They also do volunteer work (as many of the campus orgs have a volunteer component).

@rickle1 this may be a dumb question … can a student be in a regular frat AND the business frat?

I can answer that for you. DD is in both the business fraternity and a sorority. It’s fairly common. She left another student group before joining Alpha Kappa Psi to keep from being overcommitted.

^ yes it’s very common. S has gotten to know many sorority girls thru AKPsi, as they are members of both. More common for girls than boys. I think freshmen have to wait until the spring to rush (just like the regular greek system) and it is competitive. S was selected his first rush. His friends were not but he helped them get in the next semester.

Easy to get overcommitted. S plays Club Baseball, is in leadership at AKPsi (meets twice per week including exec meeting), plays intramurals and has a part time job. He had another club involvement but he dropped it as it was just too much. Biggest activity for all these kids at Wake…studying!

@rickle1 Do you know what they are looking for in the business fraternity? I saw something about a resume review. I would imagine most freshman don’t have much of a work history or involvement with business.

@citymama9 They actually help you create a resume. The rush period involves interviewing, networking with lots of the brothers (referred to as brothers even tho it’s coed, elevator pitch, resume, etc. It’s great practice whether one gets selected or not. They make a point of encouraging those who aren’t selected to rush again next semester (they take about 25 out of 75 - 100). They mean it as S was offered a bid his 2nd semester freshmen yr, but his friends who rushed were all passed over. Those who remained interested all got in the next semester.

I would say the biggest thing is to just be your genuine self but make the effort to meet as many brothers as possible during the networking sessions. That was not natural for S but it has helped him immensely and he is now far more comfortable networking (and getting out of his comfort zone).

@citymama9 Wake will have a club fair early in the fall semester where all of the clubs are represented on the quad and you can go and talk to them about what they do etc. Make sure your daughter goes to that it’s a great way for her to see what is available and some of the people that participate. Lots of kids are really involved but @rickle1 is right studying is the biggest activity. My child is in a social fraternity, is involved in a club sport and is the student manager of one of the athletic teams. So many different opportunities at Wake no matter what you are interested in!!

Thanks so very much @rickle1 and @lbf
