Questions for WFU students.

I am an Asian female from California and I am very interested in applying to Wake Forest ED. I think I will be able to adjust to the different lifestyle there, but my friends don't believe so and neither do my parents. I was wondering just how different it is there? Will it be easy for me to fit in, or will I be a loner(not to sound superficial)? I come from a low income family, so how generous are they with financial aid?
I was told that because not many people from CA apply to southern schools that I will have a better chance in admissions and in getting financial aid, is this true? How is the food? Is shopping for personal items very convienient? How is the weather year round? How are the dorms? I'm Buddhist, will I be treated as an outsider?

Just some warning... if you want scholarships/financial aid it is better to apply RD. If you apply ED, they have no incentive to give you scholarships. If you are RD, they know they're competing against school a,b, and c, so they're more like to entice you to wake via money.

I learned that the hard way this year :(

A friend of mine here at Wake is actually Asian and Buddhist. :)

I don't think you will be a loner if you try to fit in with others and make attempts to find friendships. People who only want to hang out with people 'like' them (ex: only internationals, only african american) are the ones who complain about the whole 'isolation' thing. I myself can easily be isolated but am not because i have sought to find friends... even though only 2 of them are really like me in background.

I don't know anything about FinAid other than that there are many scholarship opportunities. APPLY. APPLY. don't disregard the scholarships they offer. You may be surprised and get one!
California is gorgeous. I lived there once as a kid and have to say, you will not find that lovely weather anywhere else. Fall in winston is lovely. Its the best season. As a californian you will not like the cold winter but it is 100 times better than being up in the north (NY, boston, etc). I like wake. I love wake. The question I think most people who apply have to ask is " Do I want to live in a community or do I want to be more isolated/not noticeable"

Wake is a community. You will meet friends here.

oh, and this is for kids who are coming in: bring rainboots. It rains alot.

Fluffy is right. The campus doesn't drain well, so we get lots of puddles on the sidewalks. It's not that it rains a lot (in my opinion), but rather that the sidewalks turn into verifiable lakes at first sight of rain.

let me clarify some...

I'm a 100% satisfied with my decision to apply ED. Wake was by far my first choice...and I loved knowing I was definitely going there in October.

BUT..money was an issue...and there will always be that question in my mind if I would have gotten a scholarship had I applied RD. So.. if money is a major issue for you, I would apply RD for schoalrships.

I dont think it rains a lot...I live in Greensboro and the rain is average for Winston Salem as for any city IMO

Son didn't have an umbrella--just a water repellant jacket and did fine. No rain boots! Everything is so close and convenient on campus, you don't have much of a walk to class or to to eat.

Sorry, read kyletx's post. It doesn't rain tooooo much here. The thing is , the water drainage isn't really good... but it isn't too bad. But does look like it flooded when it happens... (I think they are fixing it over the summer)

Having lived @ WFU and a number of other campuses ... this discussion is a bit silly. Check out the annual rainfall. It's quite "normal" ... unless you live in Palm Springs or Yuma. Then you'll think you're in the tropical rainforests.

EVERY campus that has rain, has puddles. It's just that most students are out in it all day for the first time in life. If you like puddles, try U.Delaware, F&M, Penn State, and on and on and on ... Not Lehigh though. It's on the side of a mountain, where you have to be a billy goat to get to class.

Like others have said, the rainfall is normal but the drainage system is poor and puddles crop up even with the smallest showers. I would recommend a pair of rainboots.

As far as shopping, there is a nice mall (Hanes Mall) 10-15 minutes from campus. Another plus is the amount of restaurants and stores around Wake. Target and Wal-Mart are a cinch to reach (less than 5 minutes), and there are a plethora of restaurants to choose from. Chipotle, Qdoba, Applebee's, Bojangles, Burger King, and COOKOUT are some of my favorites.

it seems like it rains more because drainage sucks and because in the winter it rains instead of snowing, so it seems like more than it really is....a cold rain really does suckkk

You would fit in just fine. The only area to be concerned is coming from a low income family. Depending on who you hang out with not having a reasonable amount of spending money could be socially awkward. If you can afford to go out to eat at least once a week you should be able to cover yourself for the most part.

apply! the weather in winston does suck though, so freaking unpredictable.
