Questions from a McIntire Hopeful ;)

I got accepted into UVa CAS as an OOS and am leaning heavily toward accepting the offer... :)
But before I do make that decisive decision, I just have a few questions to ask...

Is it difficult to get into McIntire? I want to do business (maybe major in accounting or finance) so it would suck if I went to UVa and didn't get into the business school.

I'm Asian so obviously I would like it if there are some people like me within the school. How's the Asian population and is there racial stigma between groups?

My parents are worried that I would not be use to a public school (being from a small private school) so what are some pros and cons about being in a public school?

Where do UVa business graduates usually land for jobs? I don't really hear of many business people from UVa just schools like USC, Boston College, Wharton...

Thanks everybody! I look forward to being a Cavalier :D

We are dealing with 3 of your questions, as our son is OOS, attended a private school through the 8th grade and then was privately tutored his last 4 years, and wants to major in finance.

 1. Yes. Their 60% offer rate isn’t the whole story, as it is our understanding that the average UVa GPA is 3.2, while McIntire’s was 3.62 for those accepted in '09.
 2. Asians are an ORM at UVa (11.4%), and even more so in McIntire (24%). Possibly a current student can address your concern about “is there racial stigma between groups”, but I doubt that would be the case with anyone that mattered.
 3. UVa didn’t “feel” as big as it is to our son, who decided not to apply to Wharton because of his strong preference for UVa. It was the 1st “grounds” he visited and remained his 1st choice over W&L, UNC @ Chapel Hill, W&M, Hendrix and UPenn.
 4. Check out the “Prior Year Destinations Reports” here: [Statistics and Information](http://www.commerce.virginia.edu/career_services/stats/Pages/index.aspx)

I don’t want to repeat anything anyone’s already said, but basically there’s a roughly 60% acceptance rate. 30-35 of those roughly 300 spots are reserved for transfer students, and the rest for undergraduates at UVA.

There are definitely a lot of asians at UVA. From my experiences, I wouldn’t say there is a lot of racial stigma between groups. However, that might depend on being asian international vs. asian american students.

The page that OkieDad listed is a really good resource. That should address your questions about where people land jobs… we get a lot of top recruiters at McIntire through on-grounds interviewing and stuff, so you’ll definitely have plenty of opportunities to interact with company recruiters, network, and interview, etc.

May I add a question? How hard is it to maintain a GPA of 3.6 or above in the first two years?

It depends on what kind of classes you take. If you take classes like math, expect the curve to be less generous :)

That’s a tad strange Barboza. Why would their be math dept grade deflation over the other departments when math is often so integral in business? Might you explain a little more?
