My D has applied to Davidson. We are from the Midwest, not very familiar with NC and were not able to visit the school. She is serious about studies and serious about her Christian faith. Here are my questions:
1. Will she find like minded non-drinking girls to hang with at Davidson?
2. Do students leave campus on weekends very often for mall trips, dinner, movies, etc?
3. Does Davidson seem rural or more suburban?
4. Do very many girls choose to live in substance-free housing?
5. Without a car, how do students get necessary things from a place like Target or Walmart?

Yes! There are halls specifically designated as substance-free! I would guess about 25% of people don't drink, 50% drink in moderation, and 25% probably push their limits. Me? I've had very little alcohol since my arrival.

Students leave campus as much as they choose. Often times people will leave to go out to eat or to make store runs...go to Mooresville, Huntersville, etc. People rarely go into Charlotte. I do probably two or three times a month, and that's considered "a lot." But yeah...there's ALWAYS something happening on campus. They really put on a show for us. So, people are often more inclined to stay on campus, but people definitely leave, too.

Three years ago when I visited, I would have said rural, but now I would say it's definitely suburban. It's a very residential town, but there are a lot of new stores and conveniences appearing by the month. We have a nice-sized shopping center at the entrance of Davidson, which includes a Harris Teeter. We have several different restaurants both on campus and off campus. We have banks and ATMs on and off campus. Davidson is no longer "in the middle of nowhere." If ya wanna talk about "in the middle of nowhere," we should talk about Sewanee or Washington & Lee.

A lot of people choose it -- there are two full halls of each gender...so about 50 to 60 girls choose and get it. And then there is a hall or two of each gender that is sort of unofficially sub-free...people who requested it but didn't get it because there wasn't room. A lot of "sub-free" is personal choice. There are people on sub-free who drink when they're off the hall and then there are a lot of people who are not on sub-free who never drink, period. It really comes down to your daughter.

Friends, hall counselors, RAs -- even if you don't have a car, there will be someone to take you where you need to go. Also, Harris Teeter is very close. My friends and I walk there all the time if there are just a few things we need.
