Questions from a possible pre-med student at BU

Hi CC, first time poster here. I just returned from my visit at BU and I have to say I am really impressed at how the school and the city looked. However, I have a few questions that I hope you guys can help answer:

 1. I am interested in pre-med, and am wondering about medical acceptance rates/average stats of BU students who are admitted to medical school.
 2. How is the rigor of pursuing a biology major in the CAS?
 3. I hope to be able to participate in both volunteer work (possibly at a hospital?) and research while at BU. Do students get many opportunities in these areas (both on campus and in the city)? Would it be possible for an undergrad to work at the medical campus?
 4. I was accepted into CAS, but might be interested in the Human Physiology major at the Sargent school because of the gross anatomy class. Can someone shed some insight on the major or the course? Can I still take it as a CAS student? Of the two, which one would be a better environment for a premed student? Is it easy to switch between schools?
 5. Is the academic advising at CAS helpful? Is there a separate pre-med adviser?

Thanks a bunch for your help!

can’t give you the actual rates, but bu accepts ~40 of its own students to busm through regular admission and early pathway programs, and a friend of mine just got into harvard and a bunch elsewhere.

search the major on the cas site and see if they list a curriculum.
3 & 4. look at the recent forum i posted in about human phys and research, i think they were asking about human phys in that one.

don’t know about cas, but as a premed you don’t have to, but REALLY should register with the premed office which involves going there and filling out paperwork. it’s in the basement of cas, and they are separate pre-med advisers that you can meet with whenever you want to make an appointment for, and they’re extremely helpful. you also should meet with them just to get to know them because you’ll most likely need a dean’s letter for med school applications.

Thanks, I would like to know whether the committee is willing to write a rec for any student who is interested in applying to med school as well.

to be honest i don’t know since i didn’t need one for my program. but you can find out as a student by scheduling an appointment with them and they can answer all your questions.

I heard that the med school may have a slightly higher number of spots open next year…I just recall hearing it…dont know where from lol

i don’t really see why, as far as i know there’s the same number of smeds and mmedics and they haven’t increased the class size, at least i don’t think they have.
