Questions from a potential first year!

Aw, Jingle, I’m so happy to read that your son loves being a Brownie! :)

Maybe it’s time for me to do a special post about the residential colleges on the blog. It’s been a while and they deserve to be highlighted.

You can only count 2 classes between 2 majors (ie take a class and it counts for 2 majors instead of just 1 requirement), and none between minors, unless that rule has changed in the past few years. Overlapping classes means nothing if you can only count 2. There’s no reason to do econ AND commerce…

Actually Hazel there is a very good reason to do both pending on what you want to do after UVa. Also, the economics courses do count for both.

Per Economics website:

Wouldn’t you still be better served doing a specialization in the comm school than a general econ degree? Maybe you can elaborate. And thanks for the info about double counting those courses, that is why I made the disclaimer :)

Hi Hazel, Great question!

You do specialize in the Commerce School, most do Finance, in addition to having the Econ major. Mind you this route is only suggested for those students that have most all of their area requirements met upon matriculating into UVa as a first year. This allows you to complete the Commerce and Economics prerequisites before starting Comm School if given the nod. S1 will declare his Econ major at the end of this semester. It is a lot of work but if you enjoy the subject material then all the better.

From your posts I have read it seems you thoroughly enjoyed your choice of study while at UVa. So for him it is the same. He enjoys it (most days), is challenged in a good way and he is
very involved in a lot at UVa. He only would have taken these options if he could do more than academics. (So for anyone else out there considering this please be sure it works for you and you are able to also be a part of all UVa has to offer!)

Hazel, I know you understand what I am saying. At UVa you can have it all if you plan it out and make time for more than just academics.

Cool, great to know. Glad to have a realistic perspective - that it’s doable with incoming prereqs done, but might kill your social life otherwise. Most incoming kids fail to put that in perspective until a semester has gone by.
