So I got into Tulane and got accepted to the honors college and it’s one of my top schools but I have a few questions/concerns so if anyone could answer one or more that’d be great!
- I am vegetarian and was wondering what the vegetarian options are like on campus and in New Orleans. I know brief supposedly has bad food but like how bad exactly is it? And is it easy to find restaurants in Nola that serve vegetarian options? (And I don’t just mean like salads I mean like actual food hahah)
- What is the violence and crime like in New Orleans? Do students feel safe at Tulane? What about the area around Tulane? What about being/walking alone?
- How bad is the sexual assault on campus? I read tulanes recent study that had twice the national average of undergrad women who had been sexually assaulted. How prevalent is this problem and are there people watching out for this kind of stuff or are they passive about it? Like for example if you passed out at a frat and someone tried to take advantage of you would it be more likely for the frat brothers to just overlook someone’s actions or would they actually try and step in?
- What are the sororities HONESTLY like?? How competitive/snobby are they? Or are they more like genuine sisterhoods? Are they all very wealthy girls who care a lot about appearance? And how politically active/involved are any of them?
- And finally I need to ask about housing. I know wall is pretty much the nicest and I could live there because I got into honors. I am worried though because I like to go out/party a lot, and probably will around 4 times a week my first semester. I also read you cannot pregame in these dorms. So do people ever go hard and party a lot in wall? Like I don’t just mean they go out once or twice a week but I mean would I be able to find people in there who actually like to party a lot not just sometimes? I am worried because I think finding people on the same hall as you is a good way to meet friends but I want to meet people who are like me and have the same interests/party routines and I’m worried I wouldn’t be able to find that in wall, yet at the same time I like cleaner living spaces and I know Monroe and sharp are anything but clean. I also like to cool and wall has kitchens on like every floor so I just need some advice as to where I should live. Is there any housing that’s the best of both works or a compromise between these? (I don’t know anything about greenbaum but I heard it’s nicer housing just don’t know what kind of students live there)
Great questions. I am a prospective student as well. Choosing between Tulane and another school. I hope we can get some good unbiased answers to these important questions.
@naenae29 and @Choicesarehard See below: .
- Vegetarian options. Bruff, the student dining hall, has a vegan pantry with vegetarian options including breads and pastas. Also there is a "Peak Performance" dining station with a meat-free menu.
Checkout http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/2012/03/bruff-tastic.html#!/2012/03/bruff-tastic.html
You can also purchase wavebuck$ to eat outside of Bruff. There is a Food Court in the LBC (student center).
https://diningservices.tulane.edu/dining-choices/uptown/food-court.html Tulane has dieticians who you can speak to about your dietary needs. Also, i believe that Tulane has a “Vegan club” that you can join and learn more info.
You can also use Wavebuck$ to eat at Rimon, which is at Hillel, or at Le Gourmet, both of which have vegetarian foods and snacks. You can also purchase NOLA$ to eat at off-campus restaurants, some of which may have vegetarian options. Also, Tulane partners with Loyola University (right next door, a 5 minute walk) dining services for reciprocal dining privileges for students so you can also inquire if they have vegetarian food options as well. - Safety/crime: When we took our daughter last year at this time to campus I actually asked several students randomly about crime and safety whenever i had the chance (while my daughter cringed) because it was a concern to us too. But honestly all the students we talked to all felt safe. IMO Tulane is no worse or better than other schools located in cities. See the attached thread which sheds light on this topic:

- Sexual assault on campus: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/2053896-sexual-assault-a-seriious-issue-at-tulane.html As you will see from the thread, i believe this is overblown and that Tulane is no worse than most other schools.
- Sororities: I don't know the answer to your specific questions. There are 11 sororities on campus each with their own "reputation." https://www.greekrank.com/uni/60/sororities/ I know that the houses on campus are for meetings, meals, gatherings but the girls do not live in the houses. This is different from other schools like Michigan where the greek houses are like mansions and students can live in them as a residential living option.
- Housing --Sharp and Monroe are the most social dorms. You will find students who like to party and students who don't like to party at each dorm. Sharp and Monroe are more social because they house only freshmen, whereas the other dorms are mixed with freshmen and sophomores. Also, the more social aspect of these two dorms is due in part due to the corridor hallway set up where it is easier to meet and congregate with all the other girls on your floor, who also share one large bathroom. In contrast, Wall has Suites with their own bath, so that might inhibit some interaction because you will mostly be with your suitemates and it will take a bit of extra effort to find floor mates with similar party animal proclivities. For this year, I understand you will not be able to pick your dorm, so even if you wish to be in a dorm that is more social, you won't get to choose. But if you write on your housing application that you "likes to party 4 or more times per week" i am sure Residence will try to accommodate you so that you would be placed with someone with similar like :) IMO partying should be limited until you are on secure footing academically.I think that you will love Mardi Gras because that is the most fun-filled festival of parades and partying not only downtown in French Quarter but also uptown along St. Charles by the campus.
