Questions from a Prospective Student

Hey Guys,

I’m a student from NYC who would love a shot to attend Rutgers. I do however have some questions regarding the university that hopefully some of you guys can answer for me.

Im Currently in a CC in New York with 19 credits & a 3.568 GPA. I will be taking 17 more credits in the Fall and im a BIZ major. I’m aiming for a 4.0 gpa this semester to bump up my GPA due to the increased competition i’ve heard about. Now here are my questions: (a)Does being an “Out of Stater” increase my chances? (b)When would be the perfect time to apply to Rutgers for the Spring '10 semester? (c) Is is true that the average financial package annually for a Rutgers student is 17k?? (d) Approx. how far is Rutgers from NYC? (E) Can someone “chance me?”

I’m not the best person to answer your other questions…but I’d guess that Rutgers is about 45 minutes from NYC (I live nearby, and it takes me 40 minutes to get to NYC.) There’s a train station near the College Avenue campus that a lot of students use to go to NYC.

Are you talking about rutgers Newark or Rutgers NB? Cuz if you talking about rutgers Newark, i think about 20 to 25 minutes from midtown manhattan(train). If your talking about about NB then i think about 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Cuz i live about 35/40 from nyc and it takes me an hour and a half to get to Rutgers NB, by train. 50 minutes by car,

(a) I don’t think being an out of stater increases your chances, but it’s always nice to have people from somewhere else other than Jersey!
(b) For the Spring Semester, there’s a deadline. I found out that for Spring 2010 that the deadline is October 1, 2009. So . . . I guess early September is a great time to apply =)
(c) I don’t know about the financial package. I doubt that the average is 17k. Rutgers gave me jack squat. Don’t bet on them giving you a lot of money. Most don’t get anything. =
(d) I’ve taken the Northeast Corridor line from New Brunswick to Secaucus, NJ. That takes around 50-55 minutes. Considering that New York City is the next stop after that – maybe a little over 60 minutes which can seem long in the eyes of others (it does to me, considering I live in Northern Jersey and it takes me only 20-25 minutes via the Turnpike through the Lincoln Tunnel.
(e) You have a great GPA. Are you applying to the business school in NB? Don’t know too much about it, so perhaps someone else on here can elaborate more on that.

thanks alot MushaboomBlue. (c) :frowning: I kinda am betting on it. 31k is pretty steep for my family right now. Hopefully you’re wrong for my sake. (d) NJ transit it is. (e) NB or Newark

a) i’ve heard that rutgers is partial to in-state students, so I would assume the opposite is true. so being an out of stater could potentially lower your chances, not entirely sure though, nothing to back that up. it’s just what i’ve heard.

c) i don’t think the average financial aid package is that much, unless you’re talking about loans and such. and i think out of state, rutgers is 36-38k, if i’m not mistaken.

d) new brunswick to nypenn is either 48 minutes express or 58-62 minutes local.

e) I think you have a great shot at newark bs, and a solid chance at getting into nb. have you also looked into the prereq courses that you need to take before going to the bs? if not, here they are: [Rutgers Business School : Eligibility Requirements](http://business.rutgers.edu/default.aspx?id=1758)

Yeah, sorry about the downer with the financial aid :frowning:

Maybe your luck might turn around.

Hmm, are you thinking about applying to both business schools? I think there are some prerequisites for the school, so I would check that out on the website.

whoooops scratch my c) i was thinking of u illinois for some reason.

Unless you are an incoming freshman and have a great GPA, Rutgers doesn’t give any financial support. And the ride from Penn station NY to NB ranges from fifty minutes to over one hour.

lols dont scare me like that Naoise. Ok I’m super-confused right now. Whats the difference between NB and Newark? I’m interpreting it as being an advanced program after you complete courses at Newark and SAS or if you already have at your current school. I have taken 2 out of those 6 Eligibity course requirements. I also will not have the 54 required credits to enter the program. Should I still apply?

are you currently a first-year student? because usually, rutgers students are in sas, then they apply for the bs around december of their second year, then by junior year, they are in the bs. sooooooo i would think that right now, you would just transfer into sas and finish off the pre reqs there, then apply for the bs.

and new brunswick and newark are simply just in different cities and nb is the more reputable one. they both have separate undergrad business schools.

also do a forum check on transferring into the new brunswick bs. i remember talking about this in like december-ish, and can’t quite remember if nb bs does take transfers or not. best of luck :)

Nah, I’m not a Rutgers student. I’m hoping to transfer in. So you’re saying I should transfer into SAS and finish off my pre-reqs before applying to the BS’?? I can take business classes without being in the business school?

Wow Rutgers doesn’t give any financial support? I’m sure Pell and Tap does though right?

bump bump guys

yes, you have to finish your pre-reqs before being admitted to the bs. and I was asking if you are a first year at ccny, was it? so are you just a first-year student? because then you would just apply to transfer into sas, finish off your pre-reqs, then apply as a second-semester sophomore to the bs. and I do not think you can take business classes without being in the business school…maybe just the intro classes ie intro to business, but the more-specific classes are specific to upperclassmen in the business school (i just checked on myrutgers registrar, and i believe i am right).

rutgers does give financial support. they offer some scholarships (competitive), but mostly student loans and such. and transfers can receive some sort of scholarship, but it’s not going to be as generous as the scholarship given to first-years. (ie they don’t give transfers full-scholarship, if i’m not mistaken).

hope this was helpful! best of luck.

dont count on any money if you’re a transfer

Yea I’m starting to realize that Lurker. Guess it’ll be for loans and grants for me.

get a 3.8 gpa with ur a.s./a.a., join phi theta kappa, and rutgers will give u 16,000. simple as that.

seriously hetero-dragon?

yup 3.8, phi beta kappa – easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

also it’s a 3.5 for phi theta kappa and 3.8 for phi beta kappa at the end of junior year (3.5 at the end of senior year) [Phi Theta Kappa - Honor Society of the Two Year College](http://www.ptk.org/members/eligibility.htm) [Rutgers: Phi Beta Kappa (About Us)](<a href=“Phi Beta Kappa | Rutgers–New Brunswick”>Phi Beta Kappa | Rutgers–New Brunswick)

and it’s rather difficult to be inducted into phi beta.
