My DD was admitted to the Rose Hill honors program and received an email about preregistration. She is considering selecting either Introduction to Theater or Visual Arts - Ubanism as her elective course. Does anyone have any information about these courses and an opinion about whether which would be a better elective to take along with the required honors program courses?

Also, she received a 4 on the Spanish Language AP exam. Will she waive out of the language requirement or will she still need to take a foreign language? If she needs to take language and decided to continue with spanish, how many semesters of Spanish would she need to take? If she decided to start a new language, how many semesters would be required of a new language?

We would appreciate any information, and also advice about who to contact at the school to ask about the language requirement.

Thanks.

Far s I know still need two years of language…and what is her major, that is something to considernwith electives…

She will have to take an online Spanish placement test and that will determine what level she will start at. She must be at a Spanish 5 level, they call it ‘exit level’.

I’m guessing that the intro to theater class will be at LC? So she would have to factor in traveling if she decides to take that.

My daughter is in the honors program at LC, and let me tell you, it’s a lot of work. Tell your daughter to be prepared to work hard.

^^^Intro to Theater is offered at RH. My S happened to get a great prof. and really enjoyed the class. He was required to see a few plays off campus (I think a couple were at LC and a couple were elsewhere in NYC) but the actual class was at RH.

Sorry I can’t help with the language requirement question as my S was in Gabelli and language is not required there. A couple of my S’s close friends thoroughly enjoyed the honors program at RH so congrats to your D – I hope she has a great experience at Fordham.

I’m a freshman at RH. I got a 4 on my AP Spanish exam as well and placed into Spanish 2001, which is the exit level for language. After 2001, you don’t need to take any more language classes for RH which is nice.

Starting a new language is very intense. Intro classes meet three times a week, twice for 1 hr 15 min and another time for around 2 hours I believe. Non-intro language classes only meet for 2 hr 30 min total a week, so if you take an intro class, you’re basically getting 2 extra hours of class.

If your daughter is really interested in trying a new language, then by all means she should do it! But if she’s not willing to put in the effort, then the class will be very difficult.

I took urbanism my first semester. There are two professors for the class. The one I had was excellent and really made the class interesting. It was an easy A (no midterm or final). The other professor is apparently very hard and makes students learn a lot of material. It’s kind of a gamble on who you get. Otherwise, I’ve heard great things about intro to theater.

If she wants to look into an intro-major course that isn’t listed on that pre-registration sheet (alas, I was a science major and didn’t pay much attention to it…), she could e-mail Dr. Nasuti about other course options. He’s terribly accommodating and might be able to make things happen. If not–my roommates both took the Invitation to Theatre course and loved it; Urbanism seems to be more hit-and-miss.

If she starts a new language, it’s four semesters, including the five-credit crash course 33 mentioned. Otherwise she just needs to take the 2001-level Spanish course.

Cheers.
