Questions from an international athlete

Hi - just wondering if someone could help me with a few questions I have about the admissions process ?

I am a Junior in the Welsh school system and play lacrosse. I have received strong interest from UPenn and will probably be committing to them in the next few weeks. Once I give my verbal commitment does that basically mean that I will be admitted to the school ? Also am I still able to go on an official visit ?

Thanks for any help

It absolutely DOES NOT mean you are admitted to the school. As of July 1, you can ask for a pre-read of your file for admissions and for financial aid.

You can go to an official visit.

okay great, thanks that’s what I thought.

Another question (sorry!) is a coach restricted in how many likely letters they send out ?

Coaches don’t send likely letters, admissions does. The coach is limited in how many players he can support though admissions. There is a limit to the total number of athletes admitted with special consideration, and the school decides how many ‘spots’ go to each team. Lacrosse might have 5 or might have 2, but it is up to the athletic director. I’d guess for men’s lacrosse at Penn it is about 5, but you can ask the coach.

You SHOULD ask the coach. You should know exactly where you stand for admissions and for recruiting.

I agree with @twoinanddone that a verbal commitment certainly does not guarantee admissions. Being a Junior, your academic stats are likely not complete, such as the SAT/ACTs, GPA, etc. So without a complete academic stats, the coach can only give you his/her verbal nonbinding commitment, but the ultimate admission decision is given by the admissions committee. During the summer the coach usually has the admission liaison do a preread of your academics and will give you an answer as to your likely chance (not a likely letter yet) for admission.
