How much does being out-of-state really hurt me? I know that 94% are in-state, but is that a because very few out-of-state students apply? Also, does being born in Texas have any weight at all, or is it only living there that counts?

It hurts you quite a bit… and its not because few out of staters apply; the numbers are so low, but because the top 10% rule accounts for such a huge percentage(~80%), there are few spots left for the rest of us. Then they want to admit the people not in the top 10% in Texas, then comes the out of staters and international students. That’s why the numbers are so low, because they take the least precedence. Being born in Texas won’t help you. In the admissions process, you are just a number, name, and residence. They don’t have time to go as deep as a lot of people would like.

Thanks for the info. While it’s not what I wanted to hear, it’s what I expected

If you have some stellar grades don’t just assume you don’t have a chancce. Whats your class rank/SAT score?

It’s all in my chance thread here on CC lol

Well your ACT and SAT are about in the same range. If your rank is where you say it is, you probably won’t get in regular admissions, much less honors. Your SAT score is good enough, but they really take rank as a big factor. Your definitely not a lost cause, but probably 25/75 chances. Even instate it wouldn’t be a sure thing, but your chances would be much better. The thing is engineering in state is still one of the hardest to get into(after business and architecture).

Gtech takes on OOS students a little more kindly than UT. So you are probably in there.

Thanks, but the rankings are really skewed. My school is definitely the most competitive in my area, add that along with a small senior class and a single B really screws you over. It’s also a complete guess, as my school doesn’t rank

I’m out-of-state (MD). Accepted to college of natural sciences, computer science entry-level. OK SAT scores, I guess (680 M, 790 CR, 690 W). Good GPA (4.0 UW, 4.17 W). No class rank (at least top 10% of high school though).

Your SAT scores are better, GPA a little lower than mine but not by much, we’re both URMs (I’m AA)… I guess you have as good of a chance as I did :)

If you were instate you’d have pretty high chances for sure. But being out of state, I’d have to say coin toss. idk too much about geo though

Umm… I’m no math major, but I could be a minor and I am pretty sure that you(aberdeen) have a higher SAT score by 80 points, and you applied to an easier major to get into.

sorry foxshox, i took a glance at his sat scores and saw 730 CR…which would give him a slightly higher sat.

that’s cool that you could minor in math… not sure what that has to do with it? i can add pretty well on a good day thanks ;)

i was just trying to give the OP some perspective, but whatever.

Oh it had no relevance to the matter at hand, just relevance to the phrase. Although adding is an intricate part of College math, but subtracting on the other hand, that’s one skill you can toss out the window.

is it? ah damn looks like i’m royally screwed. i can’t read or write too good either, but i thought i could skate by :(
