I signed up for SHOW day. What exactly do you do? Is it fun? Can anyone who participated in it a previous year describe their experience?

I am going to be living in Barrett Hall. Is the computer lab in Barrett open 24/7? How is it? I see there are only 2 lounges in the entire hall (btw do they have AC?). What exactly is in each of them? Also, one bathroom per floor (per 50 people) seems like not enough. Are they large bathrooms? Any other info about Barrett would be appreciated!

Also, I'm looking for some pictures of Barrett if anyone can send a link that would be great too.

The main picture is a slide show. You can click the little arrows on each side to switch to a different pic. (There’s only a couple, but one shows a lounge.)

There’s a link to a video of the inside of the dorm.

It has a list of what’s in the dorm/rooms.

The floor plan is interactive. Click on your room (you got your room number, right?) and a box will pop up with the specs of the room (size, outlets, closets, window, sink or not, built in furniture, etc.)

Hope this helps. =)

BTW, I’m guessing no AC. The list usually includes AC if there is any. Don’t know about the computer lab or bathroom size though. The video may show one of the bathrooms. It did for my dorm.

1) I did SHOW Day last year. If you like community service, it will be fun. If not, then not so much. I volunteered in a Head Start program in one of the neighboring communities, helping a teacher set up her classroom so that it would be ready when her students began school.

The better part of SHOW Day is that you get to meet and have lunch with a group of about 10-15 other new classmates of yours.

2) OK. About Barrett. The computer lab is no longer open. It closed when classes ended this past year. If you don’t have a printer, you can print in either Washington/Tyler/McGlothin (there’s a lab in at least one of them, but I forget which). Also, Swem is only a 4-5 minute walk.

Yes, the lounges have AC – there’s a window unit in each. One (East) is a social lounge, with a TV, ping-pong table, couches and chairs, etc. The other (West) is a study lounge, with two tables (that fit 4 people each), a couch, a small sofa, and a pretty comfortable chair.

The bathroom is plenty big. No need to worry. I only have experience with the guys’ bathroom (second floor), but there are about 8 stalls and 8 showers, plus either 4 or 6 sinks (each room has a sink).

Don’t know if they’re shutting down computer labs or not but now that W&M’s laptop requirement is several years old and all students are required to have one, the College may have found that the need for 24 hours labs is less than it used to be.

I don’t know what they’re using the old lab space for, only that it closed and that they are people working on it over the summer. I guess you’ll see what it has become when you arrive in the fall.

Yes, the Barrett lab has been shut down. Swem has lots of computers, and Tyler has a good size lab too. They’re each about a five minute walk in opposite directions from Barrett. The ISC also has a lab and that’s probably your closest now.

Yes. It is a 24/7 lab, however access to the building itself is something I could never quite figure out. It seems Morton gets locked at some point, and keycard access to buildings besides dorms seems to be very hit or miss.
