Questions from rising high school senior

Hi! I was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions I have about Shenandoah, and also tell me a bit more about it. I’m really interested in SU and I’m definitely going to apply there.

-Does SU have a musical theatre major with a concentration in voice?

-I noticed that on the brochure it says “Affiliation: United Methodist Church”. I don’t have a problem with that, except…well, I’m Jewish. What exactly does that mean? Is this an important factor at Shenandoah? Are most of the students Methodist? I tried asking the staff members about this but I was hoping for a more straightforward answer here. :)

-How many shows does Shenandoah conservatory put on a year, and what are they? (musicals, straight plays, student directed productions, etc…)

-Can anyone give me an idea of the schedule for a musical theatre student? What kinds of classes, how many, etc…

-About how many students are admitted to each freshman MT class?

-What is the audition like?

-What is Winchester like? Does it have a good theatre community?

If there’s anyone who wants to throw in some extra info that I might not have asked about, PLEASE do! SU sounds like a wonderful school and I would love to know more. Thank you so much!!

Hi CanadianActress!
I would love to try to answer some of your questions. My d will be attending Shenandoah Conservatory in the fall with MT major, voice concentration...so, the answer to your first question is...YES.
As far as the affiliation with the Methodist Church, well, my guess is that they help in supporting the school. (I could be wrong!) We are not Methodist, so do not worry about your religious background. I do know that they offer money to those who are Methodist. I would imagine the numbers, especially in the Conservatory, do not weigh one way or another.
As far as show, I know they do two major MT show a year, also opera and childrens theater, straight plays...many, many many. And freshman do audition for the shows. If you are not in a show, you will more than likely be working the show...ie: lighting.
The next few questions would be better answered by my d or another student! I know she has a ballet class at 8am m-fri!! Nice morning wake up I think!! I will direct her to your post...
My d auditioned to 8 schools and this audition wanted the most. (yes, the other schools were top schools...) I believe she needed three songs, dance, sight reading, monologue. BUT I will say, she felt very, very comfortable throughout the audition. The people here are wonderful. They are not intimidating...they want it to be a nice experience.
Winchester is a historical town, small, but not too small. The town seems to be extremely supportive of the conservatory. Remember...you are about 1 hour from DC....plenty of arts in the area.
A year ago we were in the process of visiting about 15 schools. We came to Shenadoah after visiting CCM, Carnigie, Otterbein, U of Arts and James Madison. The people are so very wonderful at Shenandoah, but the conservatory really, hmmm, how should I say it...well it BLEW us away!! I will still say the facilities were top, rival only to CCM. We left there knowing that this could easily be home to our d...and she felt the same way too. From then on, D had three schools she loved, "tied" for first choice, and Shen was one of them. She is so excited to get started there, and we wish you the best. Look her up...Inaspotlight. Send her any questions, she would love to help!
I would like to refer you to a wonderful person who helped us out tremendously. She is the director of conservatory admissions, and her name is Margie. Send her your questions, she is extremely helpful...just go to the website, under conservatory admissions......

Best of luck! Any more questions, ask away!

Thank you SO much!!! That was so helpful, I really appreciate it! I think I will look up your D if that's okay. I am so excited to apply!! Thanks again! :D

notfromme, I, for one, would love to hear more about how Shenandoah compared (in you and your D's view) with the other schools you all visited, especially, CMU and CCM, which are always mentioned in the same breath as the words "top schools." :) (Of course, we parents all know that the truly "top" schools are the ones our children end up at and will be happy at.) Were the people you met (students and faculty, as well as administration) welcoming and friendly at CMU and CCM, but the ones at Shenandoah were just more so, or was there a big difference? I believe strongly that gut feelings need to be paid attention to, and you and your D's objective analysis and gut feelings told you that Shenandoah was the best place for her. That is fantastic. I sure hope that my D has a similar reaction to at least a few of the colleges we plan to visit. Shenandoah is on the list, for sure.
Thanks in advance for anything you feel you can share, especially about how Shenandoah compared to those other programs.

Hi Notmamarose!
I sent you a private message....a LONG private message! Hope it helps some!

notfromme-could you answer notmamarose's question for me? I'm curious about that too!

littlemermaid13-
Wow, it was so long ago. CMU was at the top of d's choice. She loved it, but did not receive an acceptance to their mt program. If I remember correctly, that year they took something like two girls! But her second choice was Shenandoah. CCM was beautiful, but she would not go there. It was a much harsher atmosphere, at least then it was. The feeling we all got was that it was a very cut throat program. Actually, my younger d remembered that and did not apply there this year for instrumental performance! Shenandoah gave a warm feeling, and treated d like she was important. The students were very helpful and anxious to help. This feeling has remained the same for the past three years. She loves it there and has never thought twice about the decision she made. No regrets. I hope the choice #2 d makes is as great of a fit as Shenandoah has been for older d!! Good luck to you!

thank you so much!!!
